UPDATE from DW!
Ukraine crisis: Germany halts Nord Stream 2 approval
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said the gas pipeline project cannot go ahead now in these crisis circumstances. He said the approval process has been halted.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday that Germany has taken steps to halt the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia.

He told reporters in Berlin that his government was taking the measure in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

"That sounds technical, but it is the necessary administrative step so there can be no certification of the pipeline and without this certification, Nord Stream 2 cannot begin operating," Scholz said.

The White House has welcomed Scholz's announcement and said it would be following up with measures of its own.

Scholz calls Putin's actions 'unjustified and incomprehensible'
The German chancellor labeled Russian President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the separatist territories in eastern Ukraine "unjustified and incomprehensible."

Speaking at a joint press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Scholz said Moscow needed to be held to account for its actions.

"Now it is down to the international community to respond to this unilateral, unjustified and incomprehensible action taken by the Russian president. We need to coordinate our approach … in order to send a clear signal to Moscow that activities of this kind cannot remain without consequences."

Scholz said Germany's energy needs would need to be reassessed by the relevant government authority.

"The department of the German ministry of economics will reassess the security of our supply needs in light of what has taken place."

The German chancellor continued to push diplomacy as a way of averting what he called a "disaster."

"In this phase it is important, apart from initial sanctions, to prevent a further escalation and with it a disaster. All of our diplomatic efforts will be aimed at achieving this."

#16  have them reverse the fracking decisions

About as likely as these assholes admitting there are only two genders. Or that inflation is not "temporary." Or that BLM is a hustle built on lies. Or releasing the CDC's data that shows their pseudo-vax is vastly more harmful to 18-49 year-olds than the virus.

i.e. probability of zero

#14  LNG terminal out past Houston has been constantly loading ships that are headed to Europe, sounds like they knew this was coming and bought US Natgas before the rates went up.

All we need now is to have them reverse the fracking decisions and let out petro industry loose from the green's noose.

#13  problem with Germany getting natural gas from USA is that the gas would have to be liquefied and brought to Germany.

So instead of costing, say, $6 per million BTU at the end of the US pipeline, the cost at the port in Germany would be, say $24/per million BTU

I'm not sure how much Germany now pays for gas from Nord Stream 1 but my guess it is about $9-12 which includes the gas plus the transmission fee

#12  If Germans can't get gas from Russia they will get it from America. But don't count on Brandon to end his restrictions on domestic production. Gas will become more expensive for all of us.

#9  Nordstrean 2 isn't pumping oil. Germany gets it's supply thru lines in Ukraine. Oil prices as of today 2/23 10:45am eastern are relatively stable if not down for the week.

#7  Isn't it going to get pretty cold there, and couldn't they use the natural gas?

That was my question! It may be that not letting Vladimir sit at the Mean Girls table is more important than inconveniencing your citizens with high energy bills and freezing to death.

#6  I don't get this. Germany is pretty far north, and it's still February. Isn't it going to get pretty cold there, and couldn't they use the natural gas?

#4  Ending the Trump energy initiatives and shutting it all down for the Greens, green on the outside red on the inside, set this all up. Yet no one, no one in the Swamp can comprehend this. Bad Luck!

#3  No loss for anyone. The Germans can certify the pipeline at anytime in the future. Meanwhile, they keep purchasing Putin's oil.
Putin could respond to Germany by putting the current pipeline under repair and restricting flow to the West. Better yet, according to Putin, the pipeline is "sabotaged" by the Ukrainians.

#1  This was the whole point of claiming Russia was going to invade Ukraine in the first place. Get this pipeline cancelled! Hooray for our political elites in DC, they can and do start wars over pipelines. The Syrian war started over a pipeline from the ME oilfields to Europe.
