[HotAir] Putin just got done rescuing President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev
...president of Kazakhstan...
from a serious uprising six weeks ago, sending Russian army formations to put down demonstrators in Almaty. With his invasion bogging down, Putin asked Tokayev for more troops to support the Ukraine invasion.

Not only did Tokayev refuse, he went further in refusing to recognize the "independent" states Putin set up in the Donbas.

#4  I suspect Putin wishes to reconstitute imperial Russia, not the USSR, obliterating the old soviet republics as entities of their own.

#3  I read that Putin really needs Belorus, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan (BURK) to recreate the power of the Soviet Union. He probably figured he had Belorus and Kazakhstan halfway conquered already as the leadership of both are in his pocket.

I suspect the leader of Kazakstan read the tea leaves when Putin invaded Russia and wanted no part of being a puppet state, even more so than he is.
