Former US national security advisor H.R. McMaster: 'I believe Ukraine can win the war'
2022-03-08
[France24] In an interview with FRANCE 24 on Monday, former US national security adviser and retired lieutenant general Herbert Raymond McMaster said that Ukraine can win the war with Russia, remarking that President Vladimir Putin had already lost the conflict in a sense by not winning outright.

McMaster said the Russian military had proven to be a "Potemkin army" and said they would continue to face stiff resistance from Ukrainians backed by a united West.

He said he feared, however, that Putin might launch an all-out assault on Kyiv, similar to the one he unleashed on Grozny in Chechnya and in Syria's Aleppo. He urged Western countries to do more to help Ukraine by sending increasingly sophisticated weapons and setting up training posts in the west of the country.

McMaster predicted that Putin’s final goal is not limited to Ukraine but that he also has his eyes trained on Moldova and Georgia. He urged the world to take seriously the threat of Russian using a nuclear device, especially as it struggles on the ground in Ukraine and faces crippling sanctions from a united front of Western powers.

#11  Define 'win the war'.
Seems unlikely they'll keep Crimea or those chunks in the East.

#10  Let 'em both lose. The offer to assassinate Zelensky if the FSB assassinates Putin still stands.

#9  The Ukrainian army is where it's at because their politicians thought 10% to the Big Guy was a bargain. Let them eat the meal they bought.

#8  Ukraine needs to take what they can get and get their army out of the trap it's in in the East.

#6  I think we can catch the Ruskies with their pants down!

You are not worried about the mineshaft gap?

#5  It all depends on 'win' means doesn't it? A cheap "Short Victorious War" (like Panama '89) installing a puppet government has already hit a snag in execution.

#3  Yes, keep burning through your troops, ammo, food, pol, and resources. Buying time for others to actually get their military up from deep rusting storage to a somewhat functional status (cause the Yanks are degrading theirs as fast as politically possible).

#2  Putin has already lost strategically. He is just trying to keep grinding to force Ukraine into his terms so he can save face. If the Russians fix their logistics, wait until the mud clears up and blitzes through Kyiv and captures the government, Putin will get everything he wants.
If the Ukrainians pile up Russian bodies in front of the city and drag this out for a few months, Putin will have little choice but to call this off as his position will get weaker and weaker back home and internal unrest becomes too much.

It will be an interesting next 30 days.

#1  "Potemkin army"

Somewhat similar to the potemkim representative form of government we currently endure. Ok, I get it.
