IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) arrested several people who work in illegal human smuggling, for not paying a royalty, which it identified as insurance fees. HTS authorizes the processes of illegal human smuggling from its areas of control in Idlib into Turkish territory in return for paying $50 each person as insurance to prevent smugglers from exploiting the people. In late 2015, HTS established the Border Security Office to organize trafficking operations into Turkey along the Syrian-Turkish border and obligated smugglers to pay sums of money to allow them to pass. Members of the HTS’ security apparatus raided, last night, houses of a number of human traffickers in Atmeh town and Qah village north of Idlib, exclusive sources told North Press. The security apparatus arrested more than seven people for smuggling a group of people without paying $50 as a fee for each person, the sources added. Residents who try to cross the Syria-Turkey border in search of a better life face many dangers and sometimes they get killed by the Turkish gendarmeries. Reporting by Bara’ Shami |
