Russia continues bombardment of Ukrainian cities despite peace talk claims
2022-03-31
[NYPOST] Russian forces continued to attack the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Chernihiv on Wednesday as a small number of Russian units withdrew — just hours after Moscow pledged to "increase mutual trust" by de-escalating its military presence around those same cities.A round of Russian shelling hit a slew of civilian sites, including residential areas and at least one library, Ukrainian officials said Wednesday. The attacks came alongside renewed Russian aggression in the eastern Donbas region.

Russia claimed Tuesday that it would "radically" reduce its attacks around Kyiv and Chernihiv as a goodwill gesture amid the peace talks recently convened in Istanbul.

"Given that the talks on the preparation of an agreement on the neutrality and non-nuclear status of Ukraine have moved into a practical field ... a decision has been made to radically, by several times, reduce the military activity in the areas of Kyiv and Chernihiv," Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin had said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky replied Tuesday, "you can trust only concrete results."

#10  If the truth is on Putin's Zelensky's side why did he ban his entire political opposition including all opposing parties and close or restrict independent Russian Ukrainian media outlets?

We are only hearing one side's arguments, which are very weak. We're not even hearing the other side's arguments, instead we get a daily diet of propaganda and spin and cheerleading. This is not going to end well for us (or anyone)

#9  Did any American news outlet infirm their readers as to Putin's stated justification for the war? There was a great deal of opinion, lots of "analysis" aka spin, but we didn't see the actual relevant words the man said. For Russia, NATO’s expansion into Ukraine from the beginning has been viewed as the YS positioning for a potential nuclear war against or nuclear blackmail of Russia. No western outlet even mentioned that Putin alleges, with much evidence to support it, bad faith in the provocative US positioning of US missile "defense" systems in Eastern Europe.

Readers should have concluded when a sovereign nation wants to talk about security guarantees for its own borders, and all it gets in reply is economic sanctions, something inevitable is about to take place.

There was a great deal of opinion, lots of "analysis" aka spin, but we didn't see the actual relevant words the man said. No western outlet even mentioned that Putin alleges, with much evidence to support it, bad faith in the provocative US positioning of US missile "defense" systems in Eastern Europe.

Putin warned on February 23 that “positioning areas for interceptor missiles are being established in Romania and Poland as part of the US project to create a global missile defense system. It is common knowledge that the launchers deployed there can be used for Tomahawk cruise missiles – offensive strike systems…. In other words, the allegedly defensive US missile defense system is developing and expanding its new offensive capabilities.”

"The information we have gives us good reason to believe that Ukraine’s accession to NATO and the subsequent deployment of NATO facilities has already been decided and is only a matter of time [and] American strategic planning documents confirm the possibility of a so-called preemptive strike at enemy missile systems. We also know the main adversary of the United States and NATO. It is Russia… Ukraine will serve as an advanced bridgehead for such a strike.”

#6  Pravda and Izvestia,

"In Truth there is no news and in News there is no truth."
I used to laugh at that. We were so much better than the Soviets with our free and open press.
Let us just say my views on that subject have evolved.

#5  #3 Official institutions and media outlets, and rantburg in particular are deliberately spreading lies, this is poisonous and destroys their credibility. I can never again listen to an American military spokesman and trust a single word coming out of his mouth.

Rantburg, as far as I can tell, is one if the few media outlets which presents both sides of the war, unfiltered. We want our readers to choose whom they believe, and for the most part, they have chosen.

*snip*

As far as I can reasonably tell, the Russian MoD have told the truth and done their best to not distribute false information. This is the first and main reason I argue that Russia is not losing the information war. Both Ukraine and their NATO masters utterly destroyed their credibility, nothing they say can be believed

Russian and Ukrainian military authorities are telling their version of events. As I have pointed out elsewhere, they may lie, but they cannot lie about everything. Time and space is one element they cannot lie about.

The Russian and Ukrainian MoDs has been professional in their news presentations. The Ukrainian have been less so, lamentably.

News presentations are only as good as the gatherers and your bosses allow it to be.

Of course I’m sure some people in here will be quick to point out that the American government has lied about many things before. Well, yes. But I as a human being can only speak out of my own personal awareness. My nagging doubts about my government were all confirmed by this war.
Dear Fred and dear readers:

Information wars are won by the truth

As far as I can reasonably tell, the Russian MoD have told the truth and done their best to not distribute false information. This is the first and main reason I argue that Russia is not losing the information war. Both Ukraine and their NATO masters utterly destroyed their credibility, nothing they say can be believed
Information wars are won by the truth.
There is this idea that “both sides are equally bad” and everyone spreads disinformation. No. If a general or government spokesman says something, it should and absolutely must be a true statement, not a lie. If he says that 20 enemy tanks have been destroyed, that must be a true statement. If he says that we have had 500 soldiers killed in action, this must be a true statement. See, if a general lies about enemy casualties, and his own casualties, nothing he says can be trusted. This is why it is so important for official spokesmen and outlets to not tell lies.
Our governments in the West want us to believe that everyone lies like them and it’s just not true. Our governments lie, and the Russian government tells the truth. Or at least they try to tell the truth, and frankly, telling the truth is genuinely not hard if you make an honest attempt. Anyone with a functioning brain should be able to see that now.

#2  Who was it who pointed out that "the American symbol is an eagle brandishing arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other"?

Anyone remember 'Linebacker' in December 1972?
