Moscow says Ukraine hit a fuel depot inside Russia
2022-04-01
April 1 (Reuters) - Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out an air strike against a fuel depot in the Russian city of Belgorod on Friday, an incident the Kremlin said set an unfavourable tone for peace talks with Kyiv.

Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said he could not confirm or deny reports of Ukrainian involvement in the strike as he did not have military information. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry and the general staff did not respond to requests for comment.

Video footage of the purported attack -- the first accusation of a Ukrainian air strike on Russian soil since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 -- showed what looked like several missiles being fired from low altitude, followed by an explosion. Reuters could not immediately verify the footage.

#77  Foreign Minister Lavrov was in China yesterday, today is in India for meetings with Modi. In recent weeks the foreign ministers of the U.K., Austria, Mexico and other nations traveled to India. The only foreign Minister whom Modi would meet is Russia's.

India and China are siding with Russia against the West.

#76  Clearly the Russian strategy is focused on cutting off Ukrainian access to the Black Sea -- in effect making Ukraine landlocked. Similar to the Israeli strategy against the Palestinians: shatter the nation and render it incapable of seriously threatening Israel.

Same for Russia vs Ukraine: make Ukraine into a kind of E European version of the Palestinian Territories, with no value to NATO.

#75  #40 There are 40-60,000 Ukrainian troops trapped in the Donbas cauldron. Those are / were the best equipped / trained Ukrainian forces. Having ground them down for 30 days of minimal sleep / resupply it’s time to transition. The casualty rates will increase on both sides but there are insufficient trained, equipped Ukrainians to reinforce the pocket.

This is correct. The bulk of the Ukrainian Army -- most estimates are closer to 60,000 troops -- is encircled in the East, in the Donbas. The Russians are slowly and steadily tightening the noose. If the Ukrainians lose this force, they are finished.

Russia is concentrating on the Azov region, not Kiev.

#74  The important bit for the Russians is Russian security.

And Putin's ego.

Mostly Putin's ego.

If he cared about Russia's security, he'd have made sure they had an army that wasn't just a slush fund for his buddies.

There are a couple overlapping things going on here: one is the Donbas breakaway republics thing which is pretty much a Ukrainian civil war. The other is Russian security vs NATO.

The important bit for the Russians is Russian security. The Donbas is kind of a side-quest. But success there does mean a much fatter corridor to Crimea.

You're so ignorant... The war in the Donbas has been going on for eight years! 14,000 people have died in this civil war!

It's a civil war between one side that's loyal to Kiev and that wants to join the West and another, Russian-speaking, that's loyal to Moscow. Only the ignorance of so many in the West can explain the unbelievable denial of basic facts

That's rich. It's Biden and the West's SANCTIONS that are going to cause 8-10 million people around the world to starve... and you have the gall to accuse Russia of causing starvation. Fuck you

Nonsense. We and the Confederates were / are one people. That didn't stop Sherman from burning starving and slaughtering his way through Georgia.

This is a war. War is hell. That doesn't diminish or detract from the reality the two sides are one people. It is in essence a civil war.

#50  the Kiev thrust was a tangential gambit There was maybe a 10% chance of the Ukies folding, capturing key leadership, etc. and wrapping things up quickly. Didn’t happen but it was worth a shot. More importantly was securing the Chernobyl site after the Ukrainian comments about going nuclear..

Exactly. Kiev was not a feint but a small side bet

#49  #43 IMHO the Kiev thrust was a tangential gambit. There was maybe a 10% chance of the Ukies folding, capturing key leadership, etc. and wrapping things up quickly. Didn’t happen but it was worth a shot. More importantly was securing the Chernobyl site after the Ukrainian comments about going nuclear. A dirty bomb is nobody’s friend. Operationally that thrust tied down significant numbers of the Ukrainian forces defending Kiev - who could not then reinforce the other vectors of attack. Estimate it’ll take until the end of April to complete mop up activities in the cauldron. That’s a LONG time in todays arena. Presume both sides (US and Russia) will be planning the subsequent actions in the interim. “Firer’s, watch your lane.”

#47  ...split Ukraine in two. Finally, the the third leg of the stool was to as Mearsheimer says, "wreck" Ukraine

Similar to the Union strategy in the West during the Civil War. Grant split the South in two with the victory at Vicksburg, then Sherman wrecked the heart of the south with his March to the Sea.

They called Grant a bloody butcher of his own men and Sherman today would be called a war criminal, but they won the war. In the end, that's all that matters.

#46  Kiev was never central to Russian objectives. Their two goals were 1) to eliminate Ukraine as a potential NATO bulwark and 2) to protect the Russian speaker's in the Donbas.

The tactical means of achieving goal #2 involved beating down the Azov Battalion and other fascist paras.

The strategy for achieving goal #1 had three elements. The most important by far was to secure a lasting land bridge across the Azov Sea coast all the way to Crimea so that Russia's crown jewel, the naval base at Sevastopol, will never be threatened by NATO. Next in importance is to split Ukraine in two. Finally, the the third leg of the stool was to as Mearsheimer says, "wreck" Ukraine.

After Ukraine is wrecked it will become another Gaza, a basket case ward of the Western liberal nations, the shattered rump of a nation supported by the West which fights on hopelessly against its ruthless, dominant neighbor.

#45  Could be evolving into a very costly punitive action, culminated with a scorched earth, face saving tactical withdrawal.

That was one of the options. Russia is conducting a punitive action coupled with the liberation of the breakaway republics.

If they catch the approx. ten Ukrainian combat brigades in a pocket, it will be just icing on the cake for the Russians.

Ukrainians have a history of strnading their combat formations in cauldrons.

#41  Slavyansk and Gorlovka both are impediments standing in the way of closing the lid.

Both are likely heavily mined and reinforced.

My guess is that the Ukrainians are hoping to grind down the Russians in those areas before they withdraw west.
Posted by: badanov   2022-04-01 16:13

#40  Phase one over, phase two starting. For those with military experience there’s a step called “reorganize and consolidate.” So far this has been a war of maneuver - more like naval warfare than traditional US ground doctrine. There are 40-60,000 Ukrainian troops trapped in the Donbas cauldron. Those are / were the best equipped / trained Ukrainian forces. Having ground them down for 30 days of minimal sleep / resupply it’s time to transition. The casualty rates will increase on both sides but there are insufficient trained, equipped Ukrainians to reinforce the pocket. Reductions using stand off weapons will be the preferred mode. Remember most Ukrainians speak / understand Russian. Calls to surrender will at some point be heeded. When the fixed Ukrainian force is no longer combat effective the remaining Russian forces committed will be able to transition to their next phase. Please keep in mind that the Ukraine is simply where the most visible portion of this war is being fought.
