Zelenskiy Says Post-war Ukraine Will Emulate Israel, Won't Be ‘Liberal, European'
2022-04-06 | ||
"Ukraine will definitely not be what we wanted it to be from the beginning. It is impossible. Absolutely liberal, European — it will not be like that. It [Ukraine] will definitely come from the strength of every house, every building, every person," Zelenskyy told members of the Ukrainian media during a briefing. "We will become a ’big Israel’ with its own face. We will not be surprised if we have representatives of the Armed Forces or the National Guard in cinemas, supermarkets, and people with weapons. I am confident that the question of security will be the issue number one for the next 10 years. I am sure of it." However, such measures would not serve to undercut Ukrainian democracy, he added, declaring that "an authoritarian state is impossible in Ukraine." "An authoritarian state would lose to Russia. People know what they are fighting for," he said. Read the rest at the link

#16 ^ and here's (more) proof... O Russia, the virgin eternal, So gentle and fresh, ever-vernal As Setsuko Hara Or Scarlett at Tara Or nutcracking KGB colonel! Felt the lack of the genuine article very poignantly throughout Tea over Rice last night. Accept no substitutes! |

#15 Why? Because Rantburg has become a Russian propaganda outlet. How hard is it to see? |

#14 Swiss neutrality worked because it was to hard to invade them. Check out the remainder , probably cold way bunkers, that are hidden all over Switzerland. Barns, haystacks and suck. Hard to pull a blitzkrieg on the Swiss going through the alps. |

#13 He's neither pushing any agenda nor declaring any future position. All he's doing is parroting what his handlers think the serfs want to hear. |

#12 Swiss neutrality was military. Politically, they did whatever they needed to do to get by. And not just in the 1939-45 time frame. |

#11 Why mention emulating Israel, which brings to mind decades of war with crazy neighbors? I would've said Switzerland which is famously neutral and at peace even with the Nazi's (I would say Sweden but their neutrality is looking shakier these days). He's pushing the non-liberal, non European bit but I don't really see why. |

#10 I'm just being a crank, TW. I say my name Murr-seck. A gigantic Russian named Raphael Sotak who taught German when I was a student at Shady Side Academy used to give me a bone-rattling slap on the back and tell me my name was pronounced Mor-check. Who was I to argue with a 7-foot tall 300-pound chelovek? |

#9 Being of Jewish descent does not entitle you to sainthood of some sort. We know about another 'jew' who. Goodness knows that’s true. But on this case President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been throwing spaghetti at the wall in the hope that at least one of his arguments will stick, getting help for his beleaguered country. I don’t blame him for using an argument few other national leaders can. How does he spell his name? It seems different every time. Transliterations from another alphabet generally depend on what the transcriber hears — hence the variations until the news services settle on one of them. We see that all the time in reports from Israel — The Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post have different style books for place and Arabic names. Ditto the several sites we use for reports on Iraq and Syria, making archives searches a bit more challenging. |

#8 How does he spell his name? It seems different every time. And didn't he ask the world to outlaw the letter Z? |

#7 #6 Didn't Zelensky himself press every citizen into his war, hand them half filled mags and order them to fight? Who's really responsible for the deaths of untrained people pressured into facing Russian armored and infantry? Exactly. Zelensky's behavior has nothing in common with the Israeli leadership. He is an actor who goes to Berlin and Tel Aviv and screams at people, trying to shame them with hysterics. It's a kind of emotional blackmail: "If you don't support us then you're guilty of committing another Holocaust." This is another reason that Ukraine will become Europe's Gaza. Maximalist demands, maximal poverty, war without end. |

#5 Omomolet Phutch9064, you weren’t to know, but Ha’aretz has all the problems, or faults of character if you will, of the New York Times. While their journalists (no mere reporters, they) demonstrate strong writing skills, their reporting is blindered by the stereotypical narratives common to the left around the world, which drives them to miss or ignore important stories and ditto important details of the stories they do report. If Hebrew is not one of your languages, I can recommend the Jerusalem Post, The Times of Israel, or Ynet as English languages Israeli news sites. I seem to recall the in Times of Israel also has a Russian language version — the other two might also, so that’s something to look into is your Russian is better than your English. |

#4 Am I nuts, or isn't that Herb? I only ask because if it is, that's about the most disingenuous question ever posed in all of human history. |

#3 Why is there unasked-for editorial commentary attempting to discredit the media outlet? They are called inline commentary. Rantburg is known for them. |

#2 Why is there unasked-for editorial commentary attempting to discredit the media outlet? The source is Zelensky's own words. Here are some more of his own words: Zelenskyy has been highly critical of Israel’s approach to the war, his ambassador to Israel telling reporters several days into the invasion that the president, as a Jew, “has much higher expectations of Israel than Israel can deliver.” Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Israel has carefully walked a diplomatic tightrope in an attempt to comply with American demands to speak out against Russia’s actions while simultaneously avoiding alienating Moscow – which allows the Israeli Air Force to carry out strikes against Iranian targets in Syria. Zelenskyy brushed aside those concerns during a remote address to the Knesset last month, demanding that Israel arm his country and remove limits on Ukrainian immigration imposed since the invasion. “What is this? Apathy? Calculations? Or mediation without taking a side? I’ll let you answer that question, but I want to point out that apathy kills, calculations can be incorrect. You can mediate between countries, but not between good and evil,” he said. Zelenskyy’s speech drew a harsh condemnation from Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who objected to his Ukrainian counterpart’s use of rhetoric comparing Russian actions to those of the Nazis, stating that “it is forbidden to compare anything to the Holocaust.” Ukrainian leaders have described Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians as genocide but, until recently, Israel has been reluctant to speak out against Russian actions. |

#1 The poor man's confused. Partitioned, destroyed, beaten, desperately poor and dependent Ukraine's going to be like Gaza, not Israel. Russia will be Israel to Ukraine's Gaza. The Donbas republics will be like the West Bank settlements. |
