First Russian Su35 downed in Ukraine | 3 potential reasons
2022-04-06
[YouTube - Defense Updates] A Russian Sukhoi Su-35S Flanker-E has been destroyed in combat apparently by a Soviet origin 9K37 Buk Air Defense System used by Ukraine.

The fighter jet was hit and shot down in the sky over the Izyum region in eastern Ukraine, about 120 km or 75 miles from Kharkiv. The pilot ejected but was captured by the Ukrainian armed forces.

According to reports, the Su-35S Flanker-E was on a SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) mission and armed with Kh-31P air-to-surface missile which is used as an anti-radiation weapon.

SEAD missions are carried out to knock out radars and Surface to Air Missile systems.

In this video Defense Updates analyzes why even Russia's most lethal operational fighter jet Su-35 is taken out in Ukraine?

#5  The Sukhoi had "737" painted on it, and the Buk just couldn't help itself.

#3  Once attritable armed drones take over the SEAD mission most ground based AA will be instant toast in a warfighting situation.

#2  You keep your systems turned off. You allow other systems to acquire the flight profile information and pass it to the engagement system. You set your acquisition system to engage only to initiate fire at the optimal trade off point to lighting the target and launch, then shut down again. Do this with several launch systems and the suppression craft can't engage them all.

Or do like the North Vietnamese did during Line Backer faced with overwhelming SEAD, volley fire into a virtual box without guidance. You'll hit something and they did, however, by day three they were out of SAMs.
