#23  In short, Government Induced Own Goal. All of them. All of it.
This. Exactly so.

#22  Almost entirely Covid Protocol fallout. Go back three years, and a war like this has no real noticeable worldwide effect. Regionally served shortages could be alleviated by markets further away.

In fact, Russia was among the least lockdown countries, where China was neck and neck with Australia and New Zealand as the worst lockdown countries. IIUC Russia was still conducting ag commodity trade until Elenskyy was declared to be a rock star and the Ukraine Laundry System was threatened, so flip every lever which included sanctions.

In short, Government Induced Own Goal. All of them. All of it. For two years now this has been predicted, all for those people to be turned down because Halloween Party LARP in the front and in the back a total boning of our currency so every Pedocrat could get their slush fund allowance. The Brandon Residency has been decidedly anti-agriculture - as their kind always has been.

Remember when it was proposed back at week 6 of 2 weeks to flatten the curve that we tally those who Died From Covid and those who die because of Government Response Because Covid?

Already the suicides, substance abuse deaths can be counted. In the long term, kids getting the beagle treatment will be added. In between, I propose malnutrition, starvation, and deaths from potential food riots.

#20  We could sell them around 150 thousand Bangladeshis, rohingya and pakis. Organs, fertilizer, whatever...

#17  Dems claim to be moving away from Iowa caucuses. We'll see. Meanwhile, the screeching about Russia / Ukraine collapsing the fertilizer market, the wheat market, and so on should mean even spoiled corn will be sold for the foreseeable future here in the US.

ZH had an article the other day that corn farmers are switching to soybeans because they need less fertilizer.

I favor lo-carb whole wheat tortillas, myself...

#16  Why corn as fuel? in two words: Iowa Caucuses. Biofuels are just a disguise for Ag Subsidies.

#13  Well, the beans in chili argument can get lethal. But you really can't make good chili without garlic and onions.

I can handle being alone more than I can handle going without chili.

#12  as long as you like living the solitary life No wonder my social life was so limited when I started eating cloves of raw garlic every day.

#11  Cut out sugar. Limit processed carbs. Only drink top-shelf, and then in moderation.

Like onions, beans are great, as long as you like living the solitary life.

#10  #6 The world's best onions are planted about 70 miles south of us.
==========================

#7 Agree on several points, mainly in that we are seeing way too many Corned bi-products added to other food products,
=================

#8 Corn as fuel.
5+ Billion tons worth per year.
Since 2011 the USA has used more Corn for Fuel than For Feeding Staving people.

Adding up the energy costs of corn production and its conversion to ethanol. Multiple sources tell us that 131,000 BTUs are used to make 1 gallon of ethanol which treats 10 gallons of Gasoline. One gallon of 90/10 Gas/Ethanol treated fuel has an energy value of around 76,300 BTU's. or

While conventional untreated Regular gasoline has an energy content of about 116,090 Btu's per gallon.

So not only are we wasting food to feed people. We are wasting close to as much energy in doing so.

WHY?

#9  Using corn to make ethanol for fuel is as big a sin as abortion.

#8  Onion diet. As long as you aren't making onion rings, you should lose weight. You will lose friends.

#7  Big switch to planting beans instead of corn due to lower fertilizer requirements.

It would be nice if this switch could be made permanent. King Corn and putting HFCS into every other packaged food and beverage are probably the biggest causes of the obesity epidemic. It would save us billions in wasted subsidies as well.

Also less US corn production would help small Mexican farmers and reduce economic pressures on Mexicans, which would reduce illegal immigration. Less corn is a good thing.

#5  Like jet-setting celebs screeching about gerbil worming, I think there's enough of an obesity problem in the West to make more expensive food a good thing for the foreseeable future.

What we have seen here in Middle Easter GA. is lots of farm acreage planted in 2021 in WHEAT and harvested last week. The farmers are were collecting the straw until the rains hit us.

BTW: The Fields planted in Wheat this time, have usually been Soybean, or Corn for farm feed or cotton. Wheat was a new thing and not common in this neck of the woods.

#2  The Chinese stopped exporting fertilizer to the US in December (Belarus and Russia continued until February). Prices have doubled in the US - ask any farmer you know. Big switch to planting beans instead of corn due to lower fertilizer requirements. And BTW tractors run on diesel not gasoline. Going to be a very interesting year for our agriculture sector
