| Ukraine believes, and satellite seems to confirm, that Russia is moving forces into position to try a new major push to take substantial territory west of Luhansk and Donatsk cities (that are capitals of the separatist breakaway regions). This would require effective contributions from new conscripts, units withdrawn from the N and NE battles, the L and D separatist militia and whatever else Russia can put on the field. Ukraine has forces dug in along this front but probably needs to reinforce its units and get civilians out of the way. Putin presumably wants to proclaim victory or impending victory by May 9 which is V-E day and typically a big parade day in Moscow. and yet Russia hasn't completely subdued Mariupol yet despite throwing a lot of their forces into this effort for weeks and despite the fact that Mariupol has been surrounded since 2 March. |
