Executions by firing squad are beneath this country's dignity
2022-05-08
[The Hill] South Carolina’s plan to carry out executions by firing squad was put on hold April 20 by the state supreme court, which granted temporary reprieves to two men who had elected that method under a state law requiring that condemned inmates choose either the firing squad or electrocution.

Forcing such a choice adds a sadistic element to execution’s cruelty and inhumanity. Being required to select a method of being killed is ghoulish and horrible.

As bad as the fact of choice is, the inclusion of the firing squad makes this legal requirement even worse. Execution by firing squad is beneath the dignity of any civilized nation.

Austin Sarat is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence & Political Science at Amherst College and the author of “Lethal Injection and the False Promise of Humane Execution.”...so there is no method this tool won't object to

#24  Crucifixions have historically been underrated as deterrents.

Colloquially referred to as 'nail him down', has been show to reduce second offenses.

#23  Convicted murderers are a protected class. Conservative Supreme Court justices are not. Any questions?

#22  And yet the same people routinely broadcast that America is an undignified, inhumane fascist dictatorship.

Which is it, people? America can't be beneath its dignity and yet have no dignity.

Considering that events ghoulish and horrible are what lead up to this decision point, I'm not real sympathetic. Besides, "My body, my choice", right?

Putting any hideous, sadistic murderer peacefully to sleep is not punishment or justice.

Such people need a mental and physical deterrent.

Whether it be Sparky, swinging and kicking, or airing out, each make a real deterrent.

I myself believe and support a simple execution standard, called "Execution In Kind" by some.
Using the method of execution that the Murderer used to kill his/her victim(s). It is no more cruel and unusual to the Murderer what was used.

#7  It's pretty absurd we are still having this discussion in a country where every police evidence locker in even some small towns has enough fentanyl to kill everyone at the Super Bowl.

#6  Compared to the electric chair or a botched lethal injection, a firing squad is very humane.

I would rather take that as when several high caliber rounds go through the heart and center chest, the body immediately goes into shock and the person is out of it almost instantly. Death follows seconds later. Nice and quick.

#4  If we went by "eye for an eye," there would be lots of bludgeoning, strangulation and knife executions.

Hard on the guards? Maybe. Dirty secret is there are some that would get off on it.

#3  Madame Guillotine awaits. Quick and proven effective. No record of 'ooops'.

Why should any person convicted of premeditated murder have the consideration of 'humane'?

Execution by firing squad is beneath the dignity of any civilized nation.

When you re-civilize this country we can consider it, but till then we're up to our *** in feral creatures that look human.

#2  As capital murder involves premeditation, the perps are all familiar with choosing a modality of death already.

#1  But the government sanctioned, systematic slaughter of 50,000,000 innocent unborn or recently born infants since January, 1973 is..... "dignified?"
