#21  I gave up long ago and accept whatever random name the site assigns me. Been hanging out here close to 20 years and it was initially frustrating to keep losing my nickname. Now I don’t care. I just enjoy the wit, insight and repartee. And the trolls - don’t want to leave anyone out!

#20  I lose my nic every time I clear cookies. FWIW.

#18  Thanks all for the insights. This time it had no idea what my nym was, and is back to 314 comments. I use an iPad as well, but a different nym. Never screws up. Well, THAT way anyway.

#17  Each machine will have a nym cookie reference.
Something beyond the nym, plus the nym, is used by Rantburg to identify poster and poster counts. The same nym on different machines(phone, pad, PC, mainframe terminal) will have different counts.

#16  Ok, Procopius2k. Thank you.

Good to know, magpie.

#15  Whiskey Mike, I regularly have two (2) counts of my postings for my 'nym ('magpie') when I clear my cookies -- one (the smaller) for when I reestablish my 'nym and the second (the larger) when it settles down and recognizes that the 'nym has been used for years... One of those 'features not bugs' things, I guess.

#14  TW, I'm not sure on Apple based equipment if and how well it works. It is oriented to the specific browsers I employ and MS overall.

#13  One time it tells me I have posted 415 times, and the next it tells me I have posted 2600 times.

It is possible that you are waking up in a different timeline every day and not realizing it. Tell me, does the world keep getting stupider and stupider? Because that is one of the signs.

#12   When I routinely use CCleaner to cleanse my machine of digital droppings

Should I be doing that for my iPad, Procopius2k? I regularly clear my browser history and empty the gmail spam and trash.

#11  When I routinely use CCleaner to cleanse my machine of digital droppings, I have to make sure that I enter my nic.

#10  Perhaps someone else knows why, Whiskey Mike. My knowledge lies firmly elsewhere. ;-)

#9  And now it recognizes the nic.

#8  Can someone tell me why my nic keeps vanishing? One time it tells me I have posted 415 times, and the next it tells me I have posted 2600 times. What am I doing wrong?

#6  I usually read 'Day by Day' first, 'Dilbert' second and 'Pixy's Tech Notes' third. These give me a gentle glide path into the rest of the crappy news.

#4  I visit Tom's Hardware (the link above) every day. It's one of the more reputable tech sites in the sense that it leans towards actual tech as opposed to press-release fanboi stenography.

That said, all the tech sites are hopelessly infested with left wing politics and rooting for China is a common thing.

When I want to cause some agita, I drop a comment on such sites to the effect that "I don't go to knitting sites for recipes and I don't come to tech sites for politics." And the wailing begins.

On some tech sites, pretty much every comment thread is hijacked into politics within the first ten comments.

Tech people are sure that their narrow area of expertise (or interest, there are plenty of non-experts anxious to posture that they actually are experts) makes them smart in every other area of human endeavor. This gets you Bill Gates playing doctor and similar.

Consume their non-tech nonsense at your own risk.
