EU Sanctions Syria-Based Hurras Al-Din, Two Leaders
2022-06-01

In its fight against terrorism, the European Council imposed on Monday sanctions against al-Qaeda affiliated group Guardians of Religion Organization (Hurras al-Din) and two of its leaders.

The targeted Hurras al-Din is a group linked to al-Qaeda that operates in Syria. The council also targeted its leader Faruq al-Suri, and its religious leader Sami al-Aridi.

Hurras al-Din is an Islamist radical group established in Idlib, northwest Syria, in early 2018 as part of al-Qaeda’s global network.

Following this step, 10 persons will be subjected to asset freezes and travel bans, and three group to an asset freeze.

In addition, “EU persons and entities will be forbidden from making funds or economic resources available to listed persons and groups,” the council said.

The EU accuses the militant group of being involved in the planning of terrorist operations under the umbrella of al-Qaida and has established training camps in Syria. The group also includes several Europeans among its fighting ranks, it said.

“Today’s decision confirms the EU’s unwavering resolve to combat the enduring terrorist threat posed by Al-Qaeda, ISIL/Da’esh [ISIS], and all their regional affiliates,” the council said.

The council stressed its commitment to fighting terrorism, and taking all the possible measures against those who “continue to threaten international peace and security.”

In September 2019, the US government designated Hurras al-Din and Faruq al-Suri as a Specially Designated Terrorists and offered a reward reaching $5 million for information on al-Suni.

Since September 2016, the EU was able to apply sanctions autonomously to the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) and al-Qaeda. Before then, sanctions could only be applied to persons and entities listed by the UN or by the EU countries acting individually.
