Turkey Escalates Its Shelling After Failing To Launch New Military Operation In NE Syria
2022-06-01

Matai Hanna, the spokesman for the Syriac Military Council of the SDF, said on Tuesday that the Turkish escalation on the contact lines in northeast Syria is a reaction to Turkey’s failure to obtain the green light to start a new military operation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on May 23 that Turkey would soon launch a new military operation into northern Syria to create a 30-kilometer (19-mile) “security zone” along the border.

However, the Turkish government postponed, two days ago, the military operation indefinitely.

Hanna said Turkey is trying to exploit the world’s preoccupation with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, to displace the indigenous population of northeast Syria.

According to human rights reports, approximately 300,000 people from Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad residents were displaced from their homes as a result of Turkey and its affiliated opposition factions (SNA) invading northeast Syria in 2019.

Hanna stated that the Turkish forces do not abide by the ceasefire agreement they signed with the American and Russian sides in 2019.

Following the Turkish “Peace Spring” military operation in October 2019, which resulted in the occupation of the two cities of Tel Abyad, north of Raqqa, and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), north of Hasakah, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US.

The agreements stipulate halt of all hostilities there and the withdrawal of the SDF 30 km in depth away from the Turkish border in addition to conducting Turkish-Russian joint patrols in order to monitor the implementation of the agreements.

For days, the Turkish forces have escalated bombing villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo and in the town of Tel Tamer, north of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

The Turkish bombing resulted in great destruction in the Assyrian Church in the town of Tel Tawil. A number of schools, homes and property of local residents were also damaged, in addition to an unprecedented wave of displacement from those villages.

Turkey has given way to extremist organizations, consisting of leaders of the second and third ranks of ISIS, and other organizations, to carry out kidnappings, killings and torture within the areas under its control, according to Hanna

The spokesman for the Syriac Military Council held the Russian forces responsible for the Turkish attacks, saying: “The Russian guarantor does not take a serious attitude to stop the violations and war crimes committed by Turkey.”

Hanna drew attention to the need for the international community and countries concerned with the Syrian issue to hold Turkish forces that commit inhumane crimes accountable.
