Yellowstone floods wipe out roads and bridges, leave visitors stranded as park remains closed
2022-06-15
[NYPOST] Massive floodwaters ravaged Yellowstone National Park and nearby communities Monday, washing out roads and bridges, cutting off electricity, and forcing visitors to evacuate parts of the iconic park at the height of summer tourist season.

All entrances to Yellowstone were closed due to the deluge, caused by heavy rains and melting snowpack, while park officials ushered tourists out of the most affected areas.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, though dozens of stranded campers had to be rescued by raft in south-central Montana. Authorities also said they would be assessing a potential "loss of homes and structures" in Montana’s Stillwater County.

Elsewhere, some of the worst damage happened in the northern part of the Yellowstone and the park’s gateway communities in southern Montana. National Park Service photos of northern Yellowstone showed a landslide, a bridge washed out over a creek, and roads badly undercut by churning floodwaters of the Gardner and Lamar rivers.

  • The National Park Service said that the flooding is 'beyond record levels'

  • Yellowstone National Park closed all of its entrances and says they will remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday at a minimum

  • It's the first time since 1988 that the park has been shut down in the summer

  • A house, designated for employees of the park, was shown on video being swept away by the Yellowstone River amid rising flood levels

  • More rain, along with snow showers and thunderstorms, are predicted for Tuesday

  • At least one community, considered a 'gateway' to the park, has been declared 'isolated' in the wake of the flooding

#6  We were going to drive through there this weekend on the way to Cody. It's a LONG way around. Frantically replanning...

But 'unprecedent'? We just haven't been around long enough. Just how do they think Yellowstone Gorge got to be a gorge?

#4  The city of Boise has yet to learn what a virus the libs are and keep voting them in. The North End never made it out of the 60s. Here in the western burbs we tend not to make that call although the influx from CA and WA has polluted us a bit. Had to use 3 propane patio heaters for a todo we had yesterday...all that global warming you know.

#3  Maybe flyover country people will stop voting for and welcoming libs to their neighborhoods.
