- While clinging to a liferaft he joined in singing with the sailors to lift their spirits
- The enemy attack killed 281 sailors and the ship sank off the coast of Morocco
- Mr Bishop and his surviving 568 crewmates were rescued by HMS Venomous
- His family described him as a 'tower of strength' and he was active in his old age
