USS Samuel B Roberts: World's deepest shipwreck discovered
2022-06-25
[BBC] Explorers have found the deepest shipwreck ever identified, a US navy destroyer escort sunk during WWII.

The USS Samuel B Roberts went down during the Battle Off Samar in the Philippine Sea in October 1944. It lies in 6,895m (22,621ft) of water.

Texan financier and adventurer Victor Vescovo, who owns a deep-diving submersible, discovered the "Sammy B" battered but largely intact.

The vessel is famed for a heroic final stand against the Japanese.
That's putting it mildly. US destroyer escorts weren't designed for yardarm-to-yardarm combat with Japanese heavy cruisers, but the officers and crew of the Sammy B got the most out of their gallant little ship. See Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.

#11  What an amazing find. Incredible.

LSotTCS is a movie script ready to go. Before even getting into the latest gen of actors and their capacity to fill the roles, the current bunch of directors are absolute shit, and the committee of proper dialogue would fart all over things. Probably end up with something even worse than what the chinese did with Midway.

#9  And just an incredible feat finding this. I mean, 4 miles/7km deep? Wow.

#3  I knew a sailor that was there. His Gun Captain, he was a topside gunner on a 20mm Oerlikon mount, looked at him and said "Guns [his nickname], its been good to know ya!" Brave sailors one and all.
