Current temps in the 60F in London - will probably not top 80F tomorrow. But still a lot of summer is left.

#17  Sadly I expect the cost and time to repair will exceed the original cost and time to build the entire Hoover Dam.

And a few 80 year old+ machinists may need pulled out of retire homes to hand make a few of the parts.

#15  The 100+ degree temperatures in the southwest don't play nicely with the wind or solar generation either.

Generators/Bushings/Bearings in the Wind Turbines and Solar Panel chemistry and structures.

I expect more system and/or grid failures soon.

#14  The whole southwest grid is overstressed. With Lake Mead low, the station generators and systems have to work harder as there's a lower water flow through the turbines. That heats everything up.

#13  This one's not nearly as big as the kind Mullah Richard is describing, but it's still impressive...

#11  ^^^ Needles to say that these transformers are the size of a small house. The photos don't do them justice for their actual size.

#10  ^^You are correct. When I was there in the early 1990's on a 'deep tour' with an Electrical Group, these were still the old Westinghouse transformers from the 1930's that had been upgraded with cooling fans and to use the newer non-carcinogenic insulating oil.

Each of the 17 turbine generators produces roughly 16,500 Volts per phase. The 2,500 KVA larger single-phase transformers (there are 2 smaller ones for plant operations) step that up to 500,000 volts for transmission.

#9  ^ These would be the sort of large transformers I have read are not quickly replaceable off the shelf.

#8  The outside area there contains oil-filled stepup transformers. They can explode and produce a LOT of smoke until the oil burns off.
