[NationalNews] The Iron Dome launches interceptor missiles to track down projectiles, but the Iron Beam will rely on lasers to strike down airborne targets. The system's fibre laser is expected to down aerial targets within four to five seconds of firing using super heat.

That could apply to my last DnD group. Had a tendency to set everything on fire, intentionally and other. Set fire to two inns with a very loose respect to hands of fire and braining an idiot with a firebrand.

Distances in orbit make it unlikely to be useful.

A laser beam is highly collimated so it does not spread much. I would expect atmosphere effects like turbulence and refraction to be bigger problems.
