NYPD seizes 182 guns in massive Queens smuggling bust
2022-07-22
[NYP] NYPD cops busted five men and seized 182 handguns in an illegal gun-trafficking ring that ran weapons from Tennessee to sell on the streets of Queens, officials said Thursday.

The men exploited the lax gun laws in Tennessee and used the infamous "gun show loophole" to funnel the weapons through the so-called Iron Pipeline into New York, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said at a news conference.

The members of the ring were hit with a 1,611-count indictment with charges including criminal sale of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon in an investigation cops nicknamed "Operation Hot Cakes," Katz said.

"Illegal gun traffickers who flood our neighborhoods with dangerous firearms put every resident of our borough at grave risk," the DA said in a statement. "We have seen far too many instances of guns, purchased down South and trafficked into New York that are then recovered at devastating crime scenes, leaving bloodshed and tragedy on our streets."

#3  The "gun show loophole" is irrelevant. The scam could have also been supplied by legal gun purchases at gun shops. The sales and purchases in NYC were illegal and most purchasers & sellers are being charged - minus the stoolies, Feds and well connected folks.
A person in NYC could get on a bus to anywhere and legally purchased a gun if they wanted. These purchasers paid 2 times the value of the guns because they were not legal purchasers or they wanted a gun with no paper trail so it could be used illicitly - likely both. The guns were sold in NYC because there are a lot of criminals there with many potential unarmed victims.

#2  The have it backwards. Nobody in Tennessee is pushing guns to New York. What is happening is people who do not see a need to obey firearms laws in New York are creating a demand.
