New York health commissioner demands WHO rename 'racist' monkeypox
2022-07-27
[PostMillennial] Ashwin Vasan, the 44th Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, wrote a letter to the World Health Organization demanding that the monkeypox virus be immediately renamed, citing "racism" as the primary reason.
Posturing for the local audience, because the target isn’t interested — though they will make conciliatory noises...
"We're calling on @WHO to act immediately to rename the 'monkeypox' virus. We have a growing concern for the potentially stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the 'monkeypox' virus can have on vulnerable communities," Vasan said in a tweet on Tuesday with the letter attached.

"NYC joins many public health experts and community leaders who have expressed their serious concern about continuing to exclusively use the term 'monkeypox' given the stigma it may engender, and the painful and racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color," the letter reads.

Vasan states that the continued use of the term "monkeypox" would reignite "traumatic feelings of racism and stigma" for "Black people and other people of color, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ communities."

#26  Us vs Them, however each is defined. Racism is nothing more than another Them.

The history of civilization is a broadening of the definition of Us. It’s my understanding, though I could be wrong, that by Roman empire times, Us was anyone who managed to become a citizen, regardless of birthplace or skin colour.

Aca Joe: just because the world is full of idiots does not mean they’re right, merely that they are numerous.

#24  Anthropologically speaking, racism is ingrained in Asian society worse than anywhere. Did you know some casteist slurs are deeply embedded in Sanskrit and Hindi, references to the inferiority of certain races a matter of 'historic fact' in hindooist philosophy? The Chinese and Japanese have similar cultural thingies. It was the Turks brought african slaves here, and later the Europeans, and all Indians imbibed from the phenomenon was, 'oh these things are Sub-Human maybe... because their masters treat them so' Because casteist segregation and untouchability were already a primary essential of the civilization itself, it was accepted as a normal. Gandhi was a Brahmin, he must've had a proper Brahmin education aside from the English one. Naturally the bias came easily to him. But he realigned his views with the Africans as he grew older. And with all colonized societies in fact. After all he was subjected to the same treatment the black man was, even though he was a successful lawyer. Gandhi did some activism against apartheid in s Africa too, and later MLK drew inspiration from Gandhi's peacefull... whatever.

It took our own society centuries of laws and reform and we're still not at total equality mentally, but at least all parties want to get there. It has only these opên söciety types and other Marxist bastards been raking up the past here and preaching the hatred for past injustices, since the early 90s. It's the inherent belief in the hindu mind, that some races are just inferior that no amount if education can purge. And some bastards are happy to perpetuate that stereotype by inserting ideas if 'revolution' through crime disguised as a lashing out for historic inequality. And that is the root of these troubles.

All I know is Moses' wife was black, an Ethiopian, and Gawd was havin' none of the yammering behind her back so he put some plague on Aaron's wife or something. And that settles all questions. I may have that muddled a bit, sorry...

#17  Racism, especially against black people runs deep in the Indian psyche. Ashwin Vasan may be born there, but he is a hindoo, Indo American likely raised with a civilizational complex seeing the negroid person as sub-human. He may hide it, play the liberal to get ahead, but inside he's likely more racist than the whitest white supremacist.

#13  Monkeys appear naturally on every continent except North America and Antarctica. How is that racist again? Oh, if it doesn't instantly bring a negative mental picture of whites it must be racist.

#1  I suppose calling it gaypox is a bridge too far.

We already have 'smallpox' so maybe this one could be 'mediumpox'. That way, neither monkeys nor gay men will feel stigmatized.
