Six to die on Khulna war crime charges

[NEWAGEBD] The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday sentenced six war criminals to death for committing crimes against humanity at different places of the then Batiyaghata thana area in Khulna district during the Liberation War in 1971.

The tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam handed down the verdict.

The death row convicts are Amjad Hossain Hawladar, Sahar Ali Sardar, Atiar Rahman, Motachim Billah, Kamal Uddin Goldar and Nazrul Islam. All of them are from different villages of Batiaghata upazila in Khulna district.

They were members of the Razakar Force, according to the prosecution.

The verdict was pronounced in presence of five convicts.

Convict Nazrul Islam is still in hiding.

This is the 48th judgment of the ICT in the case of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

The tribunal delivered the verdict after examining 16 prosecution witnesses.

All the four charges were proved against the convicts.

According to case documents and sources in the prosecution, four or five Razakars including Amjad swooped on the house of Shanti Lata Mandal in Machalia village of Batiaghata and tortured and shot Vinod Mandal to death after abducting him on August 10, 1971.

In another charge, they said that the death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
recipients tortured and rubbed out unarmed Haridas Majumdar after attacking his house located in Chaprashi area of Purbahalia village under Batiaghata on October 15, 1971.

In third charge, they said that the convicts attacked Sukhdara village under Batiaghata, killed four innocent unarmed Hindu people, looted goods of four to six houses and conducted arson terrorism to eliminate the Hindu community on October 21, 1971.

On November 29, 1971, they also attacked Baroaria village of Batiaghata and shot freedom fighters Jyotish Mandal and Abdul Aziz dead.
