| #4 I remember how great it felt in 89 and 90 as the Soviet empire came down. Then, of course, there was the Saddam invasion of Kuwait Aug 90 and history moved on. |

| #1 I believe Mikhail Gorbachev, was the best ally the West ever had, in that he realized his Russia was on the wrong path; it could not join the world without reforming itself. The reform was to change the form of government, and in that, he set the nation of Russia on a New Direction. He lamented that Putin has undone his legacy of a new reformed direction for Russia just before his death... So, while the Russians are not as gregarious about "sending someone off" as the Irish ...
