Wasn't there a movie about this?

#31  And speaking of empires, artillery fire just erupted along the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia (Russian client state). Apparently Russia's deterrent ability has evaporated.

#30  That was some time ago but they've had some major wars since to reaffirm the point again and again.

Russia also has had some light engagement from time to time. Current events suggest that is not enough to win a war.

#29  I think there are lots of trade and military advantages of being part of the commonwealth.

I think the Falklands war was fought in part to show the 3rd World that England is still around despite vast distances and value of the property in question. That was some time ago but they've had some major wars since to reaffirm the point again and again.

#28  Putin and Russia claiming to be anti-imperialist at the same time they failingly attempt to reclaim their own. Uh huh. Pull the other one, and have a nice drink of copium.

#25  ^ #24 yes, I was in a rush. I repeated an other's comment. Upon review I was a bit off. The woman insisted the father died in Hatti. Another married an American woman and so was not considered. It has been a very long time to revisit this history.

#24  Dale, George VI died in 1956 at Sandringham House, Norfolk, and he had no son, just two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.

#23  Question then came up as to what advantage does a country enjoy as a colony?. Didn't go over so well here.

#22  Look for the Covid Alibi just before departure. They cannot let the Puppet out without an entourage to manage his dementia and bowel issues.

#21  I was educated a bit today by two who were older than myself. One told of The Queen's father dying in Hatti and her brother dying also so at 21 she became the Queen. 70 some years as Queen would incur some blame I suppose.

#20  I spoke to a professor who was or is teaching advanced mathematics at Frostburg College. Being from India I asked him directly about the Queen and he responded by giving me the thumbs down. I believe Putin has found a wedge to drive apart the west from many other countries. Colonialism of affected countries over many years has left a deep mark of pain. I believe Putin will apply pressure on this sore to magnify all feelings of anger. Putin offers that they keep their individuality and join his alliance with like minded peoples. He has made an interesting chess move.

Murcek's fish in a barrel.

#18  She was the Queen in power during decolonization. Perhaps this dislike is they know down deep that was a mistake.

#17  ^ Good point. Where was my thinking?

#15  Mass transit has been a Democratic fetish for decades, so this is a good thing, right?

#14  'Can you imagine Joe Biden on the bus?' Queen state funeral rules banning world leaders' private planes and demanding they are bussed in together spark incredulous reaction

#13  We'll have to trust Jill to keep Joe on a short leash while he's over there. Too bad he can't be muzzled.

#11  Dron66046, due to a Portuguese royal princesses in the late middle ages... the United Kingdoms royal line has some direct genetic links to Mo-Man. Likely as good a link as the King of Jordan.

#10  WRT the Africa reaction--two points.

There's a sampling bias in favor of dislike. It makes a "better" news story; those who don't care won't be heard from; and the ones who kind of liked her don't want to be thought disloyal to their own country/tribe. (During the civil conflict you could find people in Sierra Leone who wished the Brits would come and run the place, but they'd have changed their tune quickly if the Brits had--such is human nature.)

There's a problem with being an icon of the country--you get the bad with the good. Granted, it would almost certainly have been worse for the former colonies to have been colonies of France or Germany or Leopold II, but that's not something they can know. In the event, the Africans were often hard done by--worse than we were when we decided that we didn't want taxation without representation.
Grandpa told his stories, and his grandchildren blame the representative of UK, never mind that she had little or nothing to do with what the local officials did.

The ones that want reparations for slavery, or like the attention they get from tweeting nastiness from safe professorships at CMU--I understand where they're coming from too, but find that I'm short of sympathy.

#9  Yes, he's been known to commiserate with the mohameds a lot. And he claims he's a totally secular student of all religion.

Methinks more like an Ahab than a total Agag. The sorta flexible fruitloop that'll bow his head just about anywhere he is politely asked to. There was a rumour in the 90s he wanted to convert to Islam to marry some Turkish broad.

#8  Well, the 'voodoo tribalists' might already have a leg up with the current monarch.

#5  #4 /\ To most of them, Islam or some voodoo tribalist kind of evangelism is more appealing. Empowering even.

A cult of convenient indolence, thievery, and class envy. Failed cultures, a multi-millennial reality. Did I mention indolence? "Moslemnity," can anyone name others ?

Thank you Dron.

#3  The spread of dirty moslemnity, Dale? Besides, they're a rather thankless bunch, expecting the white man to freely share with them the fruits of his labour and in return unwilling even to give up their animalism. What do they have but hate to offer? They grow up hating themselves, then direct it at others. They want the goodies they see on teevee. Know they can't have them. They hate some more.

There's people like that in India too. I think it's got less to do with color than culture. There are sub-societies that just couldn't ever integrate with modern civilization. To most of them, Islam or some voodoo tribalist kind of evangelism is more appealing. Empowering even.

But I'll bet the hatred you are seeing on the internet is all them african aboobakars and hosseins.

#2  I have been surprised at the reactions in countries like Africa. Genuine hatred of the Queen. Her long history and traveled a path that has rankled others.
