Clash along Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan Border; 87 injured on Kyrgyz Side
2022-09-18
[KhaamaPress] Despite the two countries’ agreement on a truce, border festivities along the escalating Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border, which have been disputed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, have resulted in scores of fatalities and injuries, including at least 87 on the Kyrgyz side.

The border conflict between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan broke out on September 14th after Kyrgyz border guards accused the Tajik side of taking positions along an unmarked section of the border.

According to a statement from the Tajik side, Kyrgyz border guards opened fire on their station with guns and mortars without warning, killing one and injuring two others, RIA Novosti reported.

At least 87 people, in Kyrgyzstan alone, are reported to have endured injuries as a result of the armed festivities along the border, primarily caused by gunshots and shrapnel launched by the Tajik side.

Tajikistan, in turn, claimed that Kyrgyz soldiers had used "heavy weaponry" to bombard seven of its villages and one of its outposts. According to international media citing officials in the Tajik city of Isfara, one person was killed and three others were hurt.

The Kyrgyz side accuses the Tajik side of not keeping its end of the agreement despite meetings and phone calls between the sides of the border conflict to stop the war from escalating and to establish a ceasefire taking place.

There have reportedly been dozens of fatalities, dozens of injuries, and hundreds of thousands of displaced people who have fled their homes in order to avoid the violence on both sides of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, and the situation there is said to still be tense.

The border clash between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan flared at a time when both the Kyrgyz and Tajik were in Uzbekistan for a regional security summit, posing for pictures for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
