Swedish authorities report that the gas leak from the Nord Stream 2 hole in the Swedish Economic Zone is increasing in strength.

Why would the Russians pump gas into a leaky pipe? I’m not arguing that the Swedes are lying, it’s just that it seems an odd decision on Russia’s part. Still, this cause is leading to permanent effects like Germany building a liquified natural gas terminal that by this winter will be able to handle 20% of the natural gas previously supplied by Russia.

#10  Not sure I buy the "gas => can't get close". You sure wouldn't want to put divers down, but an ROV / drone should still be able to survey the damage.

#8  Odds being even 2022, instead of a Monolith we get a Monorail. "All the intercontinental rail systems are yours except for Europa."

#7  much like the plot device of the movie 2010.

Wait, are you saying that aliens blew up the pipeline to force humanity to unite to solve the problem? Not unpossible, 2022 being what it is. One sure sign of alien involvement will be Dennis Rodman showing up in the news again.

#6  Lot of volume in the section closed off between emergency valves. Assuming valves worked correctly.

One of the considerations with a land pipeline/storage tank is to let it burn off - after the initial discharge if that fire is extinguished, there can still be a residual leaking which could accumulate enough to reignite or cause breathing problems. Leaving the fire going reduces that.

Obviously, not an option here.

The optimist in me is hoping all the quiet media-wise is everyone trying to work together to solve this problem regardless of military tensions; much like the plot device of the movie 2010.

#5  Seawater has already intruded most the Nord Stream's 1200km length. The only way to flush it is first repair the holes.

#4  Keeping the seawater from filling the pipe and ruining it forever, perhaps.

#2  Why would the Russians pump gas into a leaky pipe?

In tweet: As long as there is gas, it won’t be possible to get close to investigate.

#1  Swedes to surrender in 3, 2, 1.

Not a countdown, a cumulative national IQ summation.
