World Cup riot erupts as fans flip cars and set fires after Belgium vs Morocco match
2022-11-28
[MIRROR] Belgium's World Cup reverse at the hands of Morocco has not gone down well in the country with supporters swarming the streets as violent scenes broke out and water canons were deployed to control the swell

Belgium fans have staged riots in the country after they slumped to an embarrassing World Cup defeat to Morocco on Sunday.

Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal both scored to earn a fantastic victory for the African side at the Al Thumama Stadium. The result has not gone down well in Belgium though with fans taking to the streets of Brussels in rampage with a car being flipped in the process.

As per various reports, police deployed water cans and fired tear gas in an effort to control the crowds as scenes turned increasingly ugly. It is believed that police arrested around a dozen people in Brussels while another eight people were detained following ugly scenes in Antwerp.

Footage has shown supporters lighting fires in the middle of the road in the Belgian capital with a red car then having its windows smashed before it was flipped.

#10  The "fans" were clearly Moroccans. Of course we're not supposed to say that.

#9  The term "Belgium fans" implies that the rioters are fans of the Belgium football team. Other sources indicate that the folks doing the rioting are fans of the Morocco team who happened to have colonized Belgium (and the Netherlands). But we can't say that, can we?

#8  In the US fans riot when they win a championship, not when they lose.

Lots of “Belgians” are North African colonists. As far as they’re concerned, their team did win.

I'll wager the football hooliganism is a mask, to cover just regularly anarchist behaviour

No doubt.

#7  I'll wager the football hooliganism is a mask, to cover just regularly anarchist behaviour, a test of strength, wolves howling under the moon.

#6  Their excitement brings tears to our eyes.

Mostly due to burning vehicles and buildings, though.

#3  Is it just me or does this off the field violence the European equivalent of 2 minutes of hate?

#2  In American football the violence is conducted on the game field. In world football the violence is conducted off the game field.

#1  ...Took me a minute to figure out that the Belgian fans were rioting in Belgium. Had they been doing so in Qatar, this would have been a very short article.
