Dutch authorities arrested on Tuesday a Syrian refugee, charging him with war crimes during the civil war in Syria and being a senior figure in the Islamic State (ISIS) and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front). The suspect, 37, sought asylum in the Netherlands in 2019 and resided in the town of Arkel, west of Rotterdam, where he was arrested. Prosecutors said that Dutch authorities received information that the suspect had a prominent role in the ISIS security services between 2015 and 2018. In addition, he allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and killed people in a Palestinian refugee camp outside Damascus between 2015 and 2017. On Friday, the man will appear before a judge in the Hague, according to the prosecution.
The suspect applied for asylum in the Netherlands in 2019 and later settled in Arkel, prosecutors said. He was scheduled to appear before an examining magistrate in The Hague on Feb. 20. It wasn’t the first time Dutch authorities arrested a suspect from the Syrian conflict. Last year, a Dutch court convicted two Syrian brothers of holding senior roles in Jabhat al-Nusra between 2011 and 2014.
