[IsraelTimes] Mahamat Deby’s father decided in 2019 to restore relations with Israel for the first time since 1972, as Israel works to expand ties in AfricaPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Wednesday with Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who is visiting Israel to open the central African nation’s embassy to the Jewish state. "We see these relations as extremely important — with a great country at the heart of Africa," Netanyahu said as the two met in Jerusalem. "These are relations that we want to upgrade to new levels, to new heights — and your visit here in Israel and the opening of the embassy are an expression of this." |

| #1 Idriss Deby, a minority ethnic Zaghawa from Ennedi (Chad's northernmost BET, Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti), took a bite against the Boko Haram invaders from Nigeria. After battles around Lake Chad he found that he had bitten off more than he could chew. A member of a minority himself, he turned to the Israelis to bail him out of what could have been a potential revolution to end the idiosyncratic Islamic BET rule in Chad that began decades earlier with Hissene Habre. Chad itself is divided in half, with the southern half of the nation being lethargic black-African and generally Christian, and the north the home of curious sedentary and nomadic ethnic Muslim tribes who all have one thing in common. They love to fight. (This aspect was well known to the Janjaweed in the Sudan who made attacks on Darfur's Zaghawa an especial priority.) We shall now see how the Israel's direct involvement in the African Sahil turns out. |
