#22   I don't think in his wildest dreams Putin expected or planned for that or he would have assassinated him a week before the invasion.

We had reports of failed attempts in the first week or two — but President Zelenskyy was in hiding away from his official office and his home, so they missed.

#21  I think Putin thought he'd get a short war. He figured the Ukrainians were just like Russians and would prefer to join up than be slaughtered. The west initially blinked (as expected) when Biden offered to help Z out of the country before Kiev fell. Only Z didn't leave and that galvanized the Ukrianians to fight. When they showed they'd fight the west grew a spine and went all in which I'm certain Putin didn't expect.

Z is corrupt garbage but he stood strong when he needed to. I don't think in his wildest dreams Putin expected or planned for that or he would have assassinated him a week before the invasion.

#20  Well if he says Russia has lost, then I guess it’s all over, and Ukraine is finished.

#13  I think eventually Milley will be taught at West Point as "how not to think."

#12  Wasn't Milley one of the guys who thought the Afghan Army could hold out against the Taliban? Isn't that why he abandoned Bagram and left $80 billion worth of materiel for the Taliban?

#8  The Russians haven't lost. But they sure as hell ain't winning. It will be a long, grinding war and the side that loses the logistical battle will lose the war. Russia when they run out of stuff and Ukraine if the west loses interest in support.

#7  The Russians did expect a short war. The Russian army went into Ukraine w/o ammo, fuel or food reserves.

Russian Army logistics plans almost always include foraging for food and fuel. Been that way for five generations.

I believe the stab for Kiev was Plan B, so when they didn't complete that, they went for the original op plan.

#6  The Russians did expect a short war. The Russian army went into Ukraine w/o ammo, fuel or food reserves. Seems a lot of them, esp conscripts, didn't even know they crossed into Ukraine while others thought they would be warmly greeted. The power of propaganda and state controlled media.

The Russians bet that Ukraine was a Crimea writ large. But Kyiv isn't Sevastopol, populated by Russian navy retirees and with plenty of time to flood the battle space with Little Green Men. In 2014, the Donbass, even with LGM preparation, there was enough opposition to the Russian takeover that the Russian army had to invade. Other places like Mariupol or Odessa, the locals were able to defeat the Kremlin putschists.

#3  ^^ The French call it chevauchée.

We call it fire and sword. It won't have the intended effect, but it is medieval.

#2  Near as I can tell, Milley seems to be the source of the meme that Russia expected a quick, short war. I personally find it hard to believe that the Russians, famed as chess players and takers of well-planned dumps, bet the farm on a decapitation strike and everything since then has been improvised.

I'm willing to concede that the Rus have lost 2 or 3 times already and are completely out of missiles and soldiers, but looking at a map, they are not doing badly against an army that has been preparing defenses since 2014.
