YBS says Turkish drones killed two commanders in Shingal
2023-02-28
[Rudaw] The Shingal Resistance® Units (YBS) on Monday announced that two of its commanders were killed in a Ottoman Turkish drone attack in Shingal while going to a wake, adding that a fighter was injured too.

YPS, which is affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), said in a statement that three of its members were on the way to the wake of two people in Shingal when they came under a drone attack by Ottoman Turkish forces.

Two commanders - Seed Ali Bada (aka. Pir Chako) and Khayri Khidir Khalaf (aka. Agir Jafri) - were killed in the attack and an unnamed fighter was injured. Pir Chako joined the group in 2016 and the other one joined it when the Islamic State

. Ankara has listed it as a terrorist group. The All-Yazidi YBS was formed by the PKK immediately after ISIS controlled Shingal and killed and kidnapped thousands of Yazidis.

Turkey considers the YBS as an offshoot of the PKK and has targeted its positions in Shingal numerous times, killing dozens of its members, including top commanders.

YBS has controlled parts of Shingal since ISIS was defeated in the town but the presence of this force and several other forces in the district has been blamed for insecurity which has prevented thousands of its residents, who fled Shingal in 2014 due to ISIS war, from returning.

There have been no comments from Turkey regarding the attack.
Shafaq News adds:
"At 12:10, a Turkish drone targeted a vehicle of YBS militants at Khanasur complex in the Sinjar district, resulting in the deaths of a commander and two party members," the statement said.

Earlier today, a source revealed that a Turkish drone bombed a vehicle carrying PKK fighters on the road linking the Bharava village and the Khanasur complex in the west of Sinjar's district of Sunouni.
And from NPA Syria:
The YBS, which is a predominantly Yazidi force, was formed in 2014 to drive out ISIS members from the area after the withdrawal of the Iraqi army. Since then, it has remained a powerful local force in the area.

claims. The area has its own military body called Shingal Protection Units (YBS in Kurdish).

Turkey regularly carries out attacks on the northern areas of the Kurdistan region, as well as it carries out from time to time air strikes air in Iraq, most of which are concentrated in the areas of Shengal and Makhmur camp in Nineveh Governorate.

On May 1, 2022 Sinjar District witnessed tension on the back of the deployment of Iraqi military units in different areas especially in the vicinity of Snuny, north of Sinjar Mountain.

The aim of deploying Iraqi military units was to impose military control over the area, remove barriers set up by the YBS, and remove the gangs, according to a security agreement signed between Baghdad and Erbil in 2020.

Residents of the Yazidi majority Sinjar region, which is located on border with Syria, went through disastrous massacres at hands of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014.
