Drone strike on Iran-backed militia warehouse in Syria kills seven: Monitor
2023-03-09
[Rudaw] Seven people died Wednesday when a fresh dronezap targeted the warehouse of an Iran-backed militia in the eastern Syria, a war monitor reported, adding that 15 others, including civilians, were maimed.

The strike in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province was not immediately attributed to anyone but it occurred in a place where the US and Israel have previously carried out attacks and where pro-Iran

militias maintain a significant presence.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) war monitor said that a total of seven people, including "three Syrians, three non-Syrians, and an unidentified man" were killed in the strike, while 15 others were maimed.

In late January, an Iran-backed commander alongside two of his escorts were killed in a series of dronezaps while the militia leader was investigating a site -also in Deir ez-Zor province- that was the site of a prior attack on Iran-backed forces. The strikes were not claimed by any entity.

Such strikes are often attributed to Israel, which has carried out hundreds of Arclight airstrike

(ISIS) terror group has also previously conducted strikes around the area, similarly targeting fighters affiliated to Iran.

According to statistics from SOHR, 16 Iran-backed Syrian and non-Syrian murderous Moslems were killed by "aerial and ground attacks" in February.
Al Ahram’s take on the story, demonstrating the fog o’war:
A dronezap killed four people in government-held eastern Syria on Wednesday in an area theoretically under Syrian government control, a war monitor said.

"Four people were killed and eight maimed in a dronezap near a weapons factory band near a truck loaded with weapons," Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.

The Observatory, which is based in the UK , could not immediately clarify who carried out the strike in the eastern city of Deir Ezzor.

It targeted a part of the city that controlled by Iran-backed factions and is home to residences of top Iranian commanders and senior officers of Lebanon Hezbollahstan

factions aligned with the Syrian government are heavily deployed south and west of the Euphrates River which runs through Deir Ezzor province.

A landmine went kaboom! in the same neighbourhood, causing casualties, the official Syrian agency SANA reported.

"A number of citizens were killed and maimed when a landmine planted by forces of Evil went kaboom! in the al-Hamidiya neighbourhood of Deir Ezzor," SANA said.

Deir Ezzor is an important border crossings connecting Iraq to Syria .

In January, eleven people were killed in this region during a series of Arclight airstrike
s.

Wednesday's attack followed a series of unclaimed dronezaps on January 30 that targeted a suspected convoy in the province and killed 11 people, including a pro-Iranian commander, the Observatory said at the time.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, including attacks on the Damascus and Aleppo airports, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses the operations.

The latest, attributed to Israel by Syria, dated Tuesday, when warplanes struck Aleppo airport, in the north of the country, causing significant damage that halted flights to and from Syria's war- and quake-battered second city, the defence ministry said.
And NPA Syria:
Seven militants of Iranian-backed militias were killed and ten others were wounded on Wednesday in an unknown aerial attack on the polyclinics building of the militias in the city center of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria.

A military source from the Syrian government forces said an unknown flight targeted with two missiles the polyclinics building that is run by Iranian-backed militias in al-Hamidiya neighborhood.

The attack resulted in the killing of three Iranian-backed militants and four others, whose identity has not been realized being military personnel or civilians, and the wounding of ten others as an initial toll, according to the source.

The source suggested that the shelling most likely occurred due to a truck laden with logistic materials for the Iranian-backed militants that was parked in front of the polyclinics building on Tuesday and was guarded by Iranian-backed militants.
Afghan Digest adds this interesting rumour:
Some IRGC personnel are thought to be among the dead after a drone strike on a Syrian arms factory.
The Times of Israel chimes in, because everyone is interested in this one, it seems:
A local activist collective, Deir Ezzor 24, reported that the building was used as base for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syrian state media, however, claimed that a mine “left by terrorists” — a term often used by the government for opposition forces battling Assad’s side in the war — detonated in the area, killing three people and wounding seven.

The state media reports showed photographs of a building with several floors collapsed and reduced to rubble, as well as a destroyed truck.
