[REGNUM] A mixed, contract-draft army, the number of which will be at least 1.5 million people, is needed today by Russia. Such armed forces will correspond to the needs of the country. This was announced on March 25 by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
As the politician noted, the contract army meets the needs of the country, but at present its strength is insufficient.
“In my opinion, at the moment, the successful defense of our Fatherland corresponds to a mixed army based both on conscription and on a contract,” he said.
Medvedev also pointed out that the ongoing special denazification operation in Ukraine had a serious impact on approaches to the formation of the Russian Armed Forces, since the strength of the army is tested during the fighting.
“Our army needs to get bigger. And the parameters of its number have been announced - this is at least 1.5 million people , ”added the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council.
As REGNUM reported , earlier Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu pointed out the need to increase the size of the Russian Armed Forces to 1.5 million people. He specified that this number should include 670,000 contract servicemen.
The head of the Ministry of Defense also indicated that the number of contract soldiers in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation should be increased to 521,000 . He noted that this must be done taking into account the replacement of mobilized citizens in the troops.
