US does not understand how important Ukraine is to Moscow
2023-04-02 | |
![]() [REGNUM] The White House did not understand in time what an important role Russia attaches to the events in Ukraine, and did not prevent hostilities. The corresponding author's article by columnist Stephen Walt
The publication says that it will never be known whether the fighting could have been avoided if the US and its allies in Europe had taken Russia's security concerns more seriously and stopped stubbornly insisting that Ukraine would one day join NATO. According to the observer, the failure of the United States to do everything possible to prevent conflict "deserves more critical consideration than has been done so far . " In addition, Walt doubts the expediency of the participation of the US authorities in the Summit for Democracy, since such events do not give Washington the desired results. As REGNUM reported , on February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his message to the Federal Assembly, stated that the countries of the West are implanting the principles of totalitarianism around the world . Their goal is unlimited power over everyone, while Russia defends its home. According to him, Western politicians turned a blind eye to the crimes committed by the Nazis in the Donbass and helped Kyiv with weapons. As a result of the wars unleashed by the United States after 2001, more than 900 thousand people died, more than 38 million became refugees, the Russian president recalled.

#7 I saw that on a map I thought "there will be blood here" Yep. Lots of ethnics Russians. When Ukraine voted to gain independence from Russia, almost all the areas voted 85-95% for. Crimea voted 54% for independence. I thought, "Well there's Russia's first target for re-integration" |

#5 The birthrate in Russia is unsustainable. So is Ukraine's. Russia has a known birthrate of 1.8. Ukraine's is 1.4. Part of both nation's issues is the brain drain and poverty. I suspect if Ukraine comes through this without being conquered, their population might boom. A good chunk of having kids is the hope for a better future. With all the money that will come in to rebuild, armaments and other industries the birthrate will have a nice little boost. Usually happens after a war. |

#4 The entire Russia/Ukraine war is for resources, including people. The birthrate in Russia is unsustainable. Russia needs more people, hence the transfer of children from Ukraine to Russia. There's also the significant resources, especially in the Donbas, plus the economic boost so much grain production would bring to Russia. Of course, Putin's desire to "recreate" the territory of the USSR also plays a part, and is a signal to the previous "Soviet Provinces" that they are next in his eyes - especially Poland and the Baltics. Ukraine isn't innocent in this, but stopping Putin there is essential in preventing a European-wide war of Russian aggression. |
