2023-05-02
By Chris Morris

[Variety] Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian folk music laureate who crossed over to major pop fame in the U.S. during the ‘70s, died Monday evening at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He was 84 years old.

Lightfoot’s death was confirmed by his longtime agent, Victoria Lord.

Lightfoot rose to prominence in the mid-‘60s, penning such folk standards as “Early Morning Rain” (a major hit for the Canadian folk duo Ian and Sylvia Tyson), “For Loving Me” and “Ribbon of Darkness,” as well as the ambitious “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” a sort of Northern equivalent to Mickey Newbury’s “American Trilogy.”

#6  Storms on the water make you know how small you truly are. Fair winds and following seas to Gordon. RIP

#5  I worked labor offloading ore boats that traveled the freshwater inland seas from north Wisconsin to the steel ports of south Lake Michigan. Big boats, dirty wet job.

#2  When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck
Sayin', "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At 7 p.m. a main hatchway caved in
He said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
