Idlib: Turkish border guards shoot 2 individuals at Syria’s border, HTS reaps zakat before farmers reap harvest
2023-05-08
[NPASyria] On Sunday, Ottoman Turkish border guards maimed a woman and her daughter while trying to cross the Syrian-Ottoman Turkish border in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria.

The women and her daughter were maimed near the village of Kherbet al-Joz in the countryside of Jisr al-Shughur city, west of Idlib.

A local source from the village told North Press that the locals helped a woman and her daughter who were shot by Ottoman Turkish border guards on Sunday dawn. According to the maimed woman’s testimony, the Ottoman Turkish border guards arrested two young men.

The woman and her daughter, who was injured in the right side of her waist, were taken to Harem Hospital, west of Idlib.

Syrians who attempt to cross into Ottoman Turkish territory are assaulted and shot by the Ottoman Turkish border guards with live ammunition.

The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press recorded the death of 23 individuals and the injury of 96 others, including at least two children and five women, since the beginning of 2023.

HTS imposes zakat on farmers before harvest

[NPASyria] On Saturday, the Zakat Authority of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) imposed zakat (obligatory payment in Islam) on farmers in HTS-held areas in Idlib, northwest Syria, despite that farmers have not yet started harvesting their lands.

A source from the HTS’ Zakat Chamber told North Press, "The imposition of zakat came suddenly because of HTS’ need for money."

He added that zakat deducts 2.5 percent of the estimated market value of the crops, without taking into account harvest costs, labor costs, and potential losses in the event of fire. In addition, the production’s gains may be less than the estimates.

"The HTS owns about 50 percent of the farmlands in Idlib, part of which it seized as spoils of war and the other part it bought under the names of civilian dealers, but in reality it belongs to the HTS," the source said.
