Ford Reverses Itself and Will Keep AM Radio in All Models-Apparently They Read Their Mail
2023-05-24
Total surrender.
[DetroitFreePress] Ford CEO Jim Farley announced Tuesday morning that the automaker is reversing its previous plan to remove AM radio from vehicles, both electric and gasoline-operated, in 2024.

Farley, in a post on his LinkedIn professional page and a tweet on Twitter, said:

"After speaking with policy leaders about the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system, we've decided to include it on all 2024 Ford & Lincoln vehicles. For any owners of Ford EVs without AM broadcast capability, we’ll offer a software update. Customers can currently listen to AM radio content in a variety of ways in our vehicles — including via streaming — and we will continue to innovate to deliver even better in-vehicle entertainment and emergency notification options in the future. Thanks to our product development and manufacturing teams for their quick response to make this change for our customers.”

#20  It's probably easier to determine which company is not woke.

Look at those banks that failed, especially Silicon
Valley. The only "experience" required was a acceptable level of wokeness.

Funny how many bank problems all fall under the jurisdiction of the San Fran Fed.

P.S. - I believe Treas. Sec. Janet Yellen was once the head of the San Fran fed. And look how fast SVB and its leftist venture capitalists got bailed out.

#19  Is Ford another one of those woke corporations?

#18  The AB stock drop has spooked some of the companies in a good way. Blood in the water does that.

#17  Their claim was that "EV shielding to make the AM radio listenable" was prohibitive. I remain skeptical

#16  At this point, I'd rather have a good bluetooth front end in the dash and just get all the content over the phone. I do understand that would not work for most people. And I'm just not going to put a new radio in my 15 year old car, so I have to pull stuff until I find the problem.

What fun.

#15  In the late 1970s I got a cool aftermarket car radio that had AM/FM and weatherband built in. Such a device is AFAICT no longer available unless you fabricate one yourself.

#14  They probably figured out people who wanted AM radio would just order their car without a radio and then go third party, which I'm sure the sales department had a sh*t fit about.

#11  I don't listen to (conservative, right-wing, religious, liberal, black, weather, political agitation, Spanish) AM mind feeds.

My 2004 stereo hasn't worked right since Bush.

I listen to the voices in my head.

#10  Radio am or fm within a hundred miles of Atlanta is a waste of tome.

#9  #6 Roger that. Spent many years where my only contact with outside world was the local newspaper - all 6 pages - and AM radio.

#8  The irony from back in the old ways when an AM radio was standard and you had to pay extra for the FM. Now they want to dump AM.

I'd be curious to know if Ford has a deal with Sirius or some other satellite radio outfit.

#7  No substitute for a good weather band radio when you are outside on an unsettled weather day. There are good weather alert apps for smartphones too, and you should have one.

#6  AM is, for a lot of the folks in the outback, the only way to get local news and weather.

#4  AM? Really? This is 2023. Way back in the 70s when the Japanese captured 30% of the auto market that stuff was old. The Japanese offered cars with good gas mileage, built right the first time, and most things came standard without the door long list of 'extras' tacked on the price. When asked why they didn't practice that old game of nickle and diming customers, their reply was that when you put them in every car, the unit price drops dramatically. The real story here is - Ford will still charge you extra for AM/FM. If they actually did drop the AM radio, it wouldn't take long for most to figure out to take your car to a car audio dealer and get a far better rig at or less in price.

#2  Now if Ford would only bring back those little wing vent windows, then now we're talking!

#1  ...I don't think that this was some Fiendish Consipracy(TM) on the part of Ford as much as that somebody in the hierarchy was fixated on the savings from deleting AM capability in the radios, and decided that this was the hill they were dying on.
