Why Putin Will Never Agree to De-escalate
2023-06-15
[ForeignPolicy] As Ukraine accelerates its counteroffensive across several sections of the front, a rational person might conclude that 2023 must surely be the last year of Russia’s war against its neighbor. Russian military resources are depleted, Moscow’s long and bloody winter offensive in the Donbas has yielded meager results, and Russian society longs for the return of prewar stability. Logic dictates that the Kremlin has no better option than to seize any opportunity to cut short its disastrous war, saving face as far as possible by clinging to the shreds of its territorial gains. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed this line of thinking at a presser this week, when he said that a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive could have the effect of "causing Putin to finally focus on negotiating an end to the war that he started."

Such calculations, however, are based on rational cost-benefit analysis and underestimate the extent to which this war is the personal project of one man: Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
. He started it single-handedly, based on his own distorted perceptions and disregarding the opinion of Russian society and ruling elites. He has continued to wage it for more than a year, defying all common sense, and there is no indication that he will ever wish to stop it. Indeed, continuing the war brings him numerous political benefits, while stopping it would offer him little but new risks.

Gee, I thought it was Baraq Obama's personal project to engineer the Maidan Coup in 2014. Then it was Joe Biden's personal project to extend NATO into Ukraine and establish a US military presence in Crimea. Silly me. What do I know?

#4  "Try something more believable..."

Ghost of Kiev?
Putin's 10 year battle with cancer...
How Russians are out of ammo...
How Russians are shooting Wagner in the back...
UKR Summer Offensive...
Winning is losing 20% of your land...
Russia is losing b/c they didnt topple ukr in 1 week...
Bakhmut was important...

I tease, I tease.

From the article: "Logic dictates that the Kremlin has no better option than to seize any opportunity to cut short its disastrous war."

Logic dictates death to the new-nazis, and if that means To The Last Ukrainian, so be it. Like death to real nazis or jiahadis. If you dont kill them all, you allow the cancer to fester - all the above are not compatible with modern society.

#3  Current kill ratio 10-8 to 1.
People keep saying that. Historically Kill Ratios reported by one side in a war are 'guesstimates' at best and usually are low grade fecal material. The Roman Senate actually told aspiring young Legates (political generals) to stop sending back barbarian body count claims. The US Air Force in WW2 supposedly shot down twice (2X !) the number of German aircraft that the Germans had manufactured between 'confirmed kills' and 'probable kills'. Try something more believable...

#2  ...I think it could also be praised thusly:

1: Volodya has completely lost his Дерьмо.
2: He is not so crazy that he doesn't understand that any slacking off will lead to his quick 'retirement', and likely in a most terminal fashion.
3. He also understands that all he has to do is wait us out; and by us I mean the US and NATO. It might take years, but all he has to do is not lose.

#1  It's all going his way. Why negotiate with western liars. Western credibility is shot. Most up to date army and equipment that has taken years to develop. Generals front line with troops. So a few are killed. Many available to replace them. Current kill ratio 10-8 to 1. Western haters of Russia have been around for many years. Just as they hate China. They want them back under control on the plantation but that will never happen now.The multi polar world is here deal with it.
