Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told this to a Regnum correspondent on June 22.
In an interview with an IA Regnum correspondent, he criticized the version of Alexander Inzartsev, chief researcher at the Institute of Marine Technology Problems named after academician M. D. Ageev, according to which the Titan could explode when it reached a certain depth due to "fatigue of the bathyscaphe hull material."
“This is a deep-sea manned vehicle! There are no bathyscaphes now at all. They don't make sense. What is a bathysphere? This is a tethered craft. A bathyscaphe is the same as a bathysphere, but without a cable - an apparatus that simply lowers and rises,” the expert said.
As the oceanologist emphasized, the Titan is a deep-sea manned vehicle, which, in fact, is closer to a small autonomous submarine.
Arguing about the causes of what happened, Chernyaev noticed that the titanium used in the manufacture of this device does not hold cyclic loads well.
“And if there is some area where there is more deflection during crushing, then for titanium it is much worse than for steel. It is stronger than steel. But if we make a four-centimeter case out of steel, then a six-centimeter one should be made out of titanium. Because titanium is not elastic and microcracks appear on the deflection. And when I saw that it was a pipe, I gasped. Because the pipe is loaded unevenly, and there the metal will get tired somewhere very quickly,” said Chernyaev.
Moreover, as the oceanologist emphasized, it turned out that there was no hydroacoustic communication on the device.
"They… corresponded! This is outrageous! They didn't set up an underwater connection. And they couldn’t speak," the expert was indignant.
Chernyaev said that it was wrong to say that "the bathyscaphe could collapse." It would rather refer to a spherical design. And when it comes to a pipe, it begins to collapse in some weak spot. First, a crack appears, but there will not necessarily be an explosion.
"Most likely, there will be no collapse as such," Chernyaev said.
According to him, "Titan" was deprived of even the simplest and cheapest navigation "with a short base."
“It was necessary to install rods on the ship on both sides, firmly fix them. Hydrophones will be lowered into the water. And put another transponder on the device, which will respond to a request from above. Then it would be possible to accurately determine the coordinates of the object,” he said.
This deep-sea vehicle, according to the scientist, would never have passed any registration, even if it had the right hull.
“Although with such a hull it was impossible to go to the depth where the Titanic lies,” he said. - But the creators of the "Titan" neglected everything they could! It turns out that even the hatch could not be opened from the inside. It doesn't go anywhere! If the apparatus floated to the surface, then it should be possible to open the hatch from the inside. Everything is blatantly wrong. Even the Titanic didn't break as many rules as the Titan. It violates all valid laws."
Summing up what was said, he noted that, apparently, when creating the device, they saved on everything - “they didn’t even want to buy a pinger for five kopecks.” There were no simple things like an emergency buoy on a cable that pops up and shows where the device is.
Earlier, IA Regnum reported that, according to Inzartsev, if the Titan was lost under the side of the Titanic or inside it, then the situation with its detection is much more complicated. In this case, one cannot do without remotely controlled uninhabited vehicles or without using a second search bathyscaphe.
According to preliminary data from the US Coast Guard, oxygen supplies on the Titan ran out on June 22 at 14:08 Moscow time. The search and rescue operation has been going on for three days at depths that exceed 4,000 meters.
