announced thwarting a smuggling operation of about 231 Syrians, who wanted to take the sea illegally for Italian shores, and arrested six people, said to be the organizers.

The ISF said in a statement that the thwart took place on July 8 at dawn, adding that the forces arrested six organizers, including a Syrian and five Lebanese people.

"The thwarting operations were not only a merely massive arrest operations by the Information Branch of the ISF but humanitarian missions that resulted in the rescue of 231 undocumented migrants colonists who were at risk of an uncertain fate in the open sea," the statement read.

In two separate operations following careful surveillance and monitoring, the ISF Information Branch carried out simultaneous operations in the neighborhoods of Miniyeh—Danniyeh and al-Mahmara, resulting in the arrest of 111 Syrians on the Miniyeh—Danniyeh highway and 120 others on the al-Mahmara highway.

The ISF said that each would-migrant had paid between $6,000 and $7,000 to the smugglers, and they were heading to the Selaata coast in Batroun.

The northern Lebanese shores are known to be a starting point for human smuggling operations, where several were thwarted, while some managed last year to make their way to Italian, Greek or Cypriot beaches via unsafe boats.

The statement stressed that these efforts are taken as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration from Lebanon to Europa

that have resulted in the death of undocumented illegal migrants colonists, most of whom were Syrians.

The Lebanese government has recently ramped up efforts to deport Syrian refugees, claiming they are burdening the government amid the deteriorating economic situation faced by the country and let alone the hatred the Lebanese people harbor for Syrians.

In 2022, Lebanon announced a plan to return 15,000 Syrian refugees to their country. They deported the first batch in the autumn of that same year and included over 100 families through three border crossings with Syria in Homs and Damascus.

Lebanon is home to roughly two million Syrians who fled from the violence of Syria’s civil war. Since the beginning of April, the Lebanese Armed Forces have forcefully deported hundreds, including some of the around 800,000 Syrians that are under UNHCR protection.

and advocacy organizations.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said, in a detailed report, that Syrian refugees in Lebanon are living in constant fear that they could be picked up and sent back to "nightmarish conditions" in Syria, regardless of their refugee status.
