Asayish, Coalition arrest ISIS prominent official in Deir ez-Zor
2023-08-02
[NPASyria] The Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) announced on Monday the arrest of a prominent official of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria.

The arrest took place with air support of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

The Asayish said that their Counter-terrorism Units, locally known as HAT, with air support by the Coalition raided a hideout of an ISIS "emir" in Deir ez-Zor countryside and managed to arrest him.

The ISIS "emir" was in charge of financing the group to attack the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the Asayish said in a statement.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.

A source from the Asayish noted that the operation was done via an airdrop, adding that they seized weapons and telecommunication devices.

ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.

After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS members were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the AANES-held areas.
