#2 ...Not sure if it was covered here at the 'Burg, but a week or so back there was a horrifying story about one of the Sherpa guides who fell ill and collapsed along the trail...and not a single one of those hundreds of climbers did anything to help him, so he died there. There's pics/video of climbers walking past him.
The Nepalese are of very mixed feelings about Everest tourism - on the one hand, it is an important source of revenue for a nation that unfortunately has damned little else to offer. On the other hand, most of the Everest tourists treat the place like a private campground that somebody else has to clean up, and they often treat the Sherpas with the same attitude.
Were I king for a day, Everest would be off limits for most of the time, and then access would be very tightly controlled.
