Government forces shell Syria’s Daraa in tandem with protests

[NPASyria] Syrian government forces shelled on Monday night a city in the western countryside of Daraa, southern Syria, with artillery shells while dozens of locals took to the streets to protest.

A local source told North Press that the government forces stationed in Tel al-Hash in the west of Daraa indiscriminately attacked the city of Nawa, west of Daraa, with mortar shells and heavy machine guns.

The source added that the attack on the city came in tandem with protest by dozens of locals demanding to “overthrow the regime.”

The government forces fired at the protestors first then started attacking the city with artillery shells, the source noted.

In the past few days, anti-government protests expanded in Daraa Governorate demanding “overthrow the regime” to enhance the deteriorating economic conditions across Syria.

Unknown people kill group leader of government forces in Syria’s Daraa

[NPASyria] Unknown button men targeted on Tuesday a leader of a group affiliated with the Syrian government forces in the countryside of Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, killing him immediately.

A local source informed North Press that Imad Issa Ayash, a leader of one of the groups affiliated with the Military Security Branch of the government forces in Daraa, was killed by unknown armed individuals on the road between the city of Dael and the town of Ibta in the countryside of Daraa.

The source added that Ayash was accompanied by a member of the group he leads and was injured. The injured member was transferred to the National Hospital in Daraa.

The source indicated that Ayash hails from Ibta and leads a group of young men from the town who joined the ranks of the Military Security Branch after the reconciliation agreement in July 2018.

In July 2018, the opposition armed faction and the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their heavy weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those oppose the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of the HTS.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in line with the 2018 agreement, the governorate has been living in a state of security chaos, with one or two daily liquidations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.

Government forces shoot down 3 drones of SNA in NW Syria

[NPASyria] The Ministry of Defense of Syria announced on Monday that its forces had shot down three drones belonging to Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka Syrian National Army (SNA), while attempting to carry out strikes on villages and towns in the countryside of Idlib and Hama, northwest Syria.

The Ministry of Defense said on its official Facebook page, “After precise monitoring and surveillance of the movements of terrorist organizations and their repeated attempts to attack innocent civilians and their properties, units of our armed forces operating in the direction of Idlib and Hama countryside managed to shoot down three armed drones.”

These drones were aiming to target the surrounding safe villages and towns, according to the ministry.

The Syrian government forces occasionally announce the success of shooting down drones belonging to the SNA or Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).

Government forces arrest 50 individual in Syria’s Idlib

[NPASyria] Syrian government forces arrested 50 individuals in their controlled areas in the southern countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria, over the past 48 hours.

A local source told North Press that the Military Security apparatus of the government forces have started a raid and arrest campaign for three days in several villages and towns in the southern countryside of Idlib.

The campaign targeted over 50 individuals, the majority of whom recently returned to the area after years of displacement in northern Syrian areas, according to the source.

The campaign mainly targeted the areas of Khan Shaykhun, al-Tamanah, Hesh, Deir al-Sharqi, and Hobait, the source noted.

The source indicated that most of those arrestees were individuals who were in opposition-held areas and returned to their villages after announcing settlement.

The campaign targeted individuals between the ages of 17 and 50, all wanted by the Military Security apparatus to serve the military service and the military reserve service, according to the sources.

On August 9, the town of Khan Shaykhun witnessed a raid and arrest campaign carried out by government forces targeting dozens of residents of the city, all wanted by the Military Security apparatus to serve the military reserve service.

Turkish shelling on Syria’s Manbij kills, injures 6 government soldiers

[NPASyria] Two soldiers of the Syrian government forces were killed and four others were wounded on Sunday in a Turkish shelling on the countryside of Manbij in northern Syria.

The Turkish forces shelled two posts of the government forces in the villages of Tokhar and Awn Dadat in Manbij in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, a local source told North Press.

The shelling killed two soldiers of the government forces and wounded four others, the source said.

On August 13, the Turkish forces military posts of the government forces in the countryside of Manbij, which resulted in the injury of two soldiers.

The frequent Turkish shelling on Manbij has sparked fears among the residents that it could be the start of a new war against the city that is still grappling with the aftermath of the war against the Islamic State (ISIS).

Manbij is one of the most important industrial centers in northern Syria, as it is a transportation hub and sits on a commercial road linking the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)-held areas with those of the Syrian government, in addition to opposition-held areas in northern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) supported by the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS liberated Manbij from ISIS in 2016 following fierce battles.
