#14 Interesting you should mention that Skid. The US is working to allow different systems to talk to each other and grab missiles to direct them to different targets. Currently everything is working on their own network with their own code. And getting defense contractors to give others their code is... challenging. But, making good headway so if a Patriot fires a missile, and an F-35 has targeting data on a cruise missile, it can grab it and guide it in with its radar to destroy it. Not in full production yet, but they are close. Maybe 2024 for implementation. |

#13 But that does mean they have to have line of sight for it to work. That's why there are realtime imaging satellites and Kalman filter CEPs. |

#12 Russians have had some success neutralizing Patriots too Not really. They can be notched, just like any other radar, but they re-acquire the target very quickly and can do ground mapping in case you want to try to fly behind a hill to get closer (works for ground following cruise missiles too). But that does mean they have to have line of sight for it to work. Physics doesn't care about your life. |

#11 As I recall, Israeli warplanes were able to pretty much ignore these systems in Syria. Made the Syrians look stupid. But then, Russians have had some success neutralizing Patriots too. Both systems will need to be upgraded as a result of what's been learned at the Ukrainian proving ground. |

#8 Having been following news from Syria, have we? We have. Been good at shooting down planes that were developed the same time it was. Israeli modern planes have been raw dogging it like a road whore. |

#7 I thought S-400 never missed. That's what we are told, anyway... Having been following news from Syria, have we? |

#6 #1 an S-400 Battery is pretty expensive Indeed. It cost Turkey the F-35 |

#5 The S series was really good... back in the 1970s. Unfortunately for Russia, it really hasn't improved that much. The radar is low fidelity, can't scan for low level threats and can't guide missiles to target. Pantsir was supposed to cover the low flying stuff and defend the S-300/400 at low and close range, but even that has proven to be a big pile of shit both in Ukraine and Syria. I have little doubt the US could completely shut down and destroy any Russian air defense they have if they wanted too. |

#4 ^^^ I was thinking the same thing Murcek. That have talked about that scrap heap like it was the greatest super weapon of all time for years now. |

#2 In this particular war, just costing Russia a lot of money is important. Whether the Ukes use the resulting air defense gap isn't as important as it might be in other conflicts. |

#1 an S-400 Battery is pretty expensive hundreds of millions of $ equivalent when you include all the spares |
