It's Sober October — here's what happens to your body when you give up alcohol for a month
2023-10-09
[NYPOST] Giving up booze for Sober October could save you from more than a wicked hangover.
We did this before, back in 1918.
Experts say ditching alcohol for a month could lead to healthier skin, weight loss, better sleep and lower the risk for future health scares.
Think about it. The Twentieth century was the very first in human history where the populace: men, wimmin, children, weren't sloshed most of the time. You either drank water or beer or ale or wine or stronger. Egg cremes, Coca Cola, and their competitors are recent developments. People who want to tell you what to do aren't.
In the first week alone of the sober spooky season, sleep should improve and it should be easier to wake up, as research has shown that regular alcohol consumption could lead to insomnia symptoms.
For those with an addictive personality it can be a period of extreme discomfort bordering on insanity. I don't drink at all anymore. Nothing tastes the same since I caught COVID, and the current tastes are mostly unpleasant. I don't see a beer or a glass of wine as deadly for anyone else.
"Although some people find drinking alcohol helps them get to sleep more quickly, it disrupts the important Rapid Eye Movement stage of sleep, leaving you feeling tired the next day — no matter how long you stay in bed," Drinkaware CEO Karen Tyrell told the Daily Mail.
Effects varied. Back in the day, I could get myself falling down drunk, fall asleep, and then wake up two hours later, unable to go back to sleep.
According to GoodRx, enjoying a pint of witches brew could lead to less REM sleep and could cause more waking up in the middle of the night.
Yeah, buddy. Beer always paused for up to a minute before going right through me.
Glowing skin is an expected symptom of sobriety as soon as two weeks after giving up spirits.
People used to have glowing skin and still have an occasional glass or good cheer or maybe dutch courage. How many people died with gin blossoms?
Because alcohol is a diuretic, it can dehydrate the skin, according to Medical News Today.
It can make you pee yourself, too.
Long-term, alcohol can also contribute to an increase risk of skin infections and cancer because it weakens the immune system.
Sure it does.
By week three, ex-drinkers may see the scale dip.
Or it could go up if you start relaxing with a nice piece of chocolate cake instead of a wee drap o' the broth.
"If you’re overweight and regularly drink alcohol, you should find that your weight falls noticeably after you stop," Tyrell said.
Ozempic probably works better though.
One beer totals around 154 calories, while a 5-ounce glass of vino is approximately 123.
I ate a Marie Callender turkey pot pie the other night that was 610 calories. A glass of Miller Lite is about 90 calories, if I remember. A glass of whisky, no matter how large, has zero carbohydrates.
Hard liquor like vodka, tequila, gin and rum typically amount to less than 100 calories per ounce.
But no carbs. So drink deeply and knock yerself out.

#10  Two of my family were "only stop when you are plastered" binge drinkers. I decided early on that I didn't want to see if I inherited that trait... So it is a personal choice.

#9  Some are more sensitive to alcohol (and other substances), while some are less. I admire those able to turn their back on an addiction, but for the generality of mankind there are health benefits as well as detriments to a regular glass of alcohol. The fisked article deserves every drop of Fred’s scorn, and more.

#8  #6 Spot on! I do still love me a good pub and that will never change - I just drink diff stuff now and get to enjoy married life and good health whilst doing so. It seemed like a good idea at the time and still is.

#7  The sleep thing is real. Use a sleep monitor and see for yourself. Passing out is not a replacement for sleep quality.

That said, I do enjoy an occasional drink, even though I know it will impact my sleep quality. All about balance.

#6  I've been clean and sober for eight years and am, at least for now, and extremely heathly middle-aged man. And because I embraced sobriety, I still have a wife and a family. So it also worked for me.

But I don't *enjoy* it! So if you don't have a problem like I do, by all means enjoy a few drinks each day. It's good for you in limited doses.

#5  I drink a beer for lunch every day. Am 69 years old, healthy as a horse, and stayed the same weight for 30 years.

I don't eat breakfast or lunch, but have a light dinner of anything I like. Cheers!

#4  German-Irish expert here.

"regular alcohol consumption could lead to insomnia symptoms."

Per se. Insomnia because you have an unfinished twelve pack to drink, or insomnia b/c you havent found your buzz yet.

"sober for what possibly lies ahead"

Me too. Decided to be sober for the Rapture. Felt I was getting too complacent with how shitty the world was trending.

#3  Gave it up last year and the results don't lie - but that only applies to me. Besides, I will want to be truly sober for possibly lies ahead.
