Iran-backed groups claim fresh attacks on US bases in Syria
2023-10-24
[IsraelTimes] Iran-backed militias in Iraq on Monday said they attacked two US bases in eastern Syria, their fourth attack in one day.

The Islamic Resistance® in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias, said two drones attacked US military bases by the al-Omar oil field in Deir el-Zour province and in al-Shaddadi further north. Officials in Washington did not immediately comment on the attack.

The attack came hours after the group grabbed credit for drone attacks on the al-Tanf garrison near the Jordanian and Iraqi borders, and a stone’s throw away from the desert Rukban camp home to tens of thousands of Syrians.

There have been a string of similar attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria over the past week. In one attack, the same group attacked two US bases in Iraq with drones, causing minor injuries among US forces.

US says it ‘destroyed’ 2 drones in southwest Syria

[Rudaw] The US army on Monday said it had downed two suicide drones near its troops in southwest Syria. The incident comes amid renewed drone attacks against American forces in Syria and Iraq by pro-Iran Death Eaters.

"On the morning of Oct. 23, 2023, the U.S. military destroyed two one-way attack drones near U.S. and Coalition forces in southwest Syria before they reached their intended targets. There are no casualties or damage," said the US Central Command in a post on X, previously Twitter.

No group has grabbed credit for the attack.

Movement. Thousands have been killed on both sides.

"In this moment of heightened alert, we are vigilantly monitoring the situation in the region and will take necessary and proportionate action to defend U.S. and Coalition forces," added the CENTCOM in the post.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor, reported on Monday that the US had downed three drones in central Syria.

Syrian state media said later on Monday that the "Iraqi resistance" targeted two US bases in Syria with two drones, which "resulted in direct injuries."

It is not clear if this attack is linked to the one reported by the CENTCOM late Monday.
An earlier Rudaw article claims:
Three drones belonging to Iran-backed militias were shot down Monday by US forces as they attempted to strike a coalition base in central Syria, a war monitor reported as anti-US attacks surge in Syria and Iraq over Washington’s support for Israel.

“American forces were able to shoot down three drones belonging to Iranian militias” as they tried to strike Al-Tanf Garrison in Syria’s Homs province, which houses US troops, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor.
