Citing the British maritime security agency, Iranian media reported that the oil tanker had changed course towards Iranian waters after being hijacked by men in military uniform in the Gulf of Oman.
The vessel was chartered by the Turkish company Tupras. It was loaded at the Iraqi port of Basra and was heading to the port of Ali Agha in western Turkey.

On the morning of January 11, in the Gulf of Oman, armed men seized the oil tanker St Nicholas, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. The vessel belongs to a Greek shipping company.
