According to him, the mandatory-colonial past of the Middle East and North Africa remains a difficult legacy for the countries of the region.
"The Sykes-Picot agreements, the Balfour Declaration and the so-called White Paper laid time bombs that continue to explode to this day. The situation is aggravated by the West's new geopolitical experiments," he said.
Lavrov emphasized that the countries of the region must themselves, without outside interference, determine their path to strengthening sovereignty and independence, socio-economic development for the benefit of their people. This, according to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, will allow liberating the historical, civilizational, religious, cultural significance of the Middle East and North Africa in the interests of peace and stability.
Earlier it was reported that three activists tried to interrupt Sergey Lavrov's speech at the UN Security Council meeting. As soon as the Russian minister began speaking, women stood up from their seats and started shouting: "Release the hostages." UN security quickly responded and escorted the violators out of the hall. It is noted that they failed to interrupt Lavrov's speech, he continued speaking.
As reported by the Regnum news agency, the delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs arrived in New York on the night of July 16 to participate in the UN Security Council meetings as part of the Russian presidency. The agenda is scheduled for two days of work - from July 16 to 17.
