WaPo Opinion Piece Decrys Harris's Price Control Speech |
2024-08-16 |
[WaPo] How...Soviet. ... most likely template for Harris's proposal is a recent bill from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). (Harris co-sponsored similar legislation with Warren in 2020, when Harris was a senator.) Warren's bill would ban any "grossly excessive price" during any "atypical disruption" of a market. Alas, no definition was provided for these terms, either; rather, the bill would empower the Federal Trade Commission to enforce bans using any metric it deems appropriate. It's hard to exaggerate how bad this policy is. It is, in all but name, a sweeping set of government-enforced price controls across every industry, not only food. Supply and demand would no longer determine prices or profit levels. Far-off Washington bureaucrats would. The FTC would be able to tell, say, a Kroger in Ohio the acceptable price it can charge for milk. -------------- bonus: Harris and Biden appeared together yesterday at an 'official govt' event that was really a campaign event in PG county MD (about a +40% Blue county). |

#2 Democracy always gets the blame but we are a Republic. Democracy is the rule of majority. |

#1 “Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.” ― Robert A. Heinlein, To Sail Beyond the Sunset |
