Several migrants killed while crossing Channel to UK as illegal migrant Channel crossings hit record

[GEO.TV] Several migrants colonists died and a two-year-old boy was crushed to death in two separate tragedies overnight when their overcrowded boats tried to cross the Channel to Britannia, French officials said Saturday.

The child was found unresponsive in an overloaded dinghy when migrants colonists, who were onboard a boat carrying nearly 90 people, issued a call for assistance on Saturday morning.

The boat suffered engine failure off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern La Belle France. The boy could not be saved, a regional prefect told news hounds.

Citing initial information, Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor Guirec Le Bras said the child — who was born in Germany to a Somali mother — was "crushed" to death, AFP reported.

Fourteen other migrants colonists were picked up by French authorities including a 17-year-old teenager who had to be hospitalised with burns to his legs, officials said. The other passengers continued their journey.

Another boat overcrowded with migrants colonists also suffered engine failure off the coast of Calais, leading to panic. Some migrants colonists fell into the sea and were rescued.

Three people — two men and a woman aged around 30 — were then discovered unconscious at the bottom of the boat, Pas-de-Calais prefect Jacques Billant said.

The three were "probably crushed, suffocated and drowned" in the water at the bottom of the boat, added the prefect. One of the adult victims was Vietnamese, and the other two are of "African origin," according to prosecutors.

 the number of illegal arrivals is slightly down from its peak in 2022 when 33,611 had landed at this point of the year, the PA News agency reports.

The yearly high for boat migrant landings on Saturday came as another four people, including a two-year-old boy, died as they attempted to traverse the busy and dangerous waterway in unseaworthy small boats.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau revealed that the young boy was "trampled to death in a boat" by other migrants colonists. According to the Daily Mail, the dead child was found on a boat with almost 90 other migrants colonists.

This week, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said that the government would immediately invest £75 million to ramp up border security measures and to facilitate National Crime Agency investigations to thwart people smuggling networks.

It came as Britannia and other G7 countries agreed to increase cooperation in confronting smugglers, which will include joint investigations as well as more intelligence sharing about migrant routes used by traffickers.

The G7 plan also committed to "working collaboratively" with social media companies to "do more to respond to online content that advertises migrant smuggling services".
